The Eastern Cape Provincial Government will join the global community in commemorating International Anti-Corruption Day on Monday, 09 December 2024. This year’s event will be held in Kwazakhele, Gqeberha in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, marking an important step in raising awareness about corruption and mobilizing communities to act against it.
This occasion will highlight the government’s commitment to ethical governance and its collaborative efforts with law enforcement agencies, civil society, and the business sector to combat corruption. It aims to foster a culture of integrity and professionalism in public service, raise community awareness about the impact of corruption, empower citizens to report corrupt activities, and promote transparency as well as accountability across society. The commemoration will also provide an opportunity to highlight the provincial government’s achievements and ongoing initiatives in the fight against corruption.
Eastern Cape Provincial Government has made significant progress in its fight against corruption. Key achievements include implementing the Provincial Anti-Corruption Action Plan and the Provincial Fraud Prevention Plan, reducing conflicts of interest by 90% over the past four years, and resolving 80% of cases reported to the National Anti-Corruption Hotline.
Furthermore, 100% of SMS members disclosed financial interests for the current cycle. The Provincial government has also promoted an ethical culture through awareness campaigns, extensive training programmes, and ethics pledges signed by public officials.
The programme will feature several activities designed to engage the community and demonstrate the province’s commitment to combat corruption, including major vehicle checkpoints, where traffic enforcement officials and stakeholders will conduct awareness activities.
Mobile service units will be deployed to provide essential services such as health checks, birth registrations and unemployment registrations. Various government departments and partner organizations will host interactive exhibitions to showcase their anti-corruption initiatives. The event will also include community engagement sessions where experts and government representatives will discuss the impact of corruption and the importance of ethical behaviour.
Additionally, certificates will be awarded to Nelson Mandela Metro Police Officers who completed ethics training earlier this year.
