NMMU Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Engagement Prof Andrew Leitch will officially open a new centre for learning called the American Corner, Port Elizabeth on the Bird Street Campus of NMMU.  The new corner will bring the best of the United States to the Eastern Cape.

The US Embassy funded the new centre to inspire youth and to give them access to astronauts, artists, scientists and the best innovators from Silicon Valley.

Leitch will be joined by Teddy B. Taylor, the US Consul General in Cape Town, for the opening of the nearly R500 000 centre.

The American Corner, Port Elizabeth will create a forum for an exchange of ideas, arts, and culture between Americans and South Africans in the Eastern Cape.  Worldwide, the US government partners with universities, non-profits, and other organizations to host 700 American Spaces in 169 countries.  There are nine American Corners in South Africa namely in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, Pietermaritzburg, Soweto, Westonaria, Pretoria, and Mamelodi.

This year the US Embassy brought scientists and astronauts from NASA to speak at NMMU. Information about opportunities for professionals, scholars, and students to study in the United States will also be accessible at the centre.

The centre will be officially opened on Monday, April 11, 2015 at 5:00pm.
