Colourful Hungarian Psychiatrist to Exhibit at artEC

19 March 2011 By Alan Straton

Dr. Vaczi can be described as a colourful multi-faceted person. He perceives life, music, food, painting and sculptor though th eyes of an artist. It is through this process that he discovered to express and experiment with the artist within himself.

Born in Hungary, Dr. Peter Vaczi has been living and working in South Africa as an psychiatrist since 1990. He comes from a creative family amongst which is his grandfather, also a psychiatrist, who was a published author and who specialized in the relationship between mental illness and art. His mother is a pianist and a visual artist who has made eight musical recordings displaying her musical talent. Dr. Vaczi himself has presented two posters at the 12th National Conference of Psychiatry in Cape Town and Lost City, portraying the artwork of people suffering from mental illness.

It is only in the past two years that Dr. Vaczi experimented with his own artistic abilities. His interest arose with his early morning walks along the Port Elizabeth beach front with his two dogs. During this time he was fascinated by the shells, drift wood, metal, leather and other debris washed up along the coast. He started creating mobiles and put them together in a manner of free-association. These objects he would combine to form dangling mobiles.

The strength of the mobiles is in its composition and use of line, shape and form of objects that are recycled. Some of them are even “musical” to add to the dimension and meaning that he wants to portray.

He calls these mobiles his “Toys” and I invite you to share his “Toys” with him in a catalogue truly inspired by nature

The Organic Mobiles Exhibition by Dr Peter Vaczi opens Monday 28th March in the ArtEC/EPSAC Upper Gallery and runs from 28 March to 8 April in the Upper Gallery.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
