The EP Elephants are charging into their first competitive match of the 2025 season, set to face off against the Valke in Kempton Park on Saturday in the SA Cup. Coach Allister Coetzee has unveiled his best possible squad, led by co-captains Stefan Willemse and Siya Nzuzo, with vice-captain Sherwin Slater rounding out the leadership trio.
Coetzee isn’t underestimating the challenge ahead and cautioned against unrealistic expectations. “Valke away is always a tough ask,” he said. “They’re a gritty side, and we’re expecting a real battle. People underestimate how tough this competition really is with as many as four fully-professional franchises in the mix”
A major boost for the Elephants is the inclusion of CJ Velleman, on loan from Western Province. The dynamic flanker adds serious firepower to the lineup. “CJ’s experience and energy are invaluable,” Coetzee noted.
Another player to keep an eye on is new flyhalf Chris Humphries who makes his competitive debut for the province having impressed in both warm up games against the Eagles and the Bulldogs.
Notable omissions due to injury are loosehead prop Kudzwai Dube, hooker Tembakhile Boltina and tighthead prop Duncan Du Buisson, but Siyakubonga Nzuzo, Deon Plaatjies and Zukisa Sali are more-than-able replacements.
