Challenge issued to Transport MEC on purchase of R838 000 car

20 November 2013 By Port Elizabethan

The Democratic Alliance will be challenging the MEC for Transport, Thandiswa Marawu, why she is purchasing a vehicle of R838 000. This purchase will cause an over-expenditure of 77% of the office of the MEC.

I will be asking the MEC during my reply speech today on the annual report of her department how this purchase can be justified.

The current budget for the MEC office is R7,088 million and after the planned purchase her office would have spent R7,92 million.

This overspend will be viremented from the Corporate Support Programme that funds staff training, internship programmes and bursary schemes.

The implication is that a car is placed above empowerment capacity in the department!

While a vehicle is a tool of trade as a public officer and member of the legislature, the MEC should be setting examples in austerity and purchase a practical, cheaper vehicle in which to conduct her business.

This avarice and largesse is unacceptable, especially from an MEC whose department is not performing at all well and considering that it is yet to receive an unqualified audit.
