Celebrating 80 Years of Aural Joy

2020 is a very important year for the PE Music Society as it celebrates its 80th birthday. Through all the years, the goal of the Society was, and will be, once more to bring classical music to music- lovers in the Eastern Cape at affordable prices. In January 1940, the Music Society (then called the PE Orchestral Society) was founded with 100 enrolled members each paying a membership fee of one shilling! How times have changed!

The first concert in the 2020 series is scheduled for Thursday, 20 February2020. It will take place in the NMU South campus Auditorium and will start at 19h30

Award-winning violinist and senior lecturer in violin and viola at NMU, David Bester, joins forces with leading South African-based guitarist and three-time SAMA nominee, James Grace, to present “From Paganini to Piazzolla”. Bester and Grace blend the sounds of bowed and plucked strings together in an exciting programme offering a dazzling display of virtuosity and refined musicianship. In addition to featuring original works for violin and guitar by Italian composers, Paganini and Giuliani, the programme also includes a strong Latin element with Piazzolla’s L’Histoire du Tango (History of the Tango) and a selection of works by other South American composers. A highlight of the evening will be a selection of musical “sweets” from Celso Machado’s Musiques Populaires Bresiliennes (Brazilian popular music).

Ticket prices at the door for Non-members will be:

  • Adults: R95.00
  • Pensioners: R80.00
  • Students: R40.00
  • Scholars: R35.00
