Hillside Karate Club Celebrates 30 Years And Continues To Serve The Community

The Hillside Dojo in Gqeberha which opened its doors to youth in 1994 continues to pay it forward to the communities in the Northern Areas. “In celebration of the Dojo’s 30-year partnership with Erica Youth and Child Care Centre, we would like to repair and re-paint the venue, replace the curtains which have now become worn, replace broken window panes, and complete the painted murals,” said Current Dojo Head, also the provincial Head of Goju-Kai Eastern Province, Clayton Thom. Prestigious Title for Local Karate Champion

An Eastern Cape sensei was awarded the prestigious shihan title, which is only bestowed to selected karateka who dedicate themselves to martial arts. Clayton Thom, formed part of a delegation who visited Japan for two weeks (28 march to 10 April), where he was awarded the shihan title. Mthobeli Vena, Daludumo Makalima and Vuyani Watani recently represented South African Judo team in the Commonwealth Championships held in Port Elizabeth. NMB to host Commmonwealth Games

Nelson Mandela Bay will host a week- long festival of judo when the Commonwealth Judo Games 2016 take place in the city from 23 to 28 April at the NMMU Summerstrand campus. The first national championship for the newly-formed United World Karate South Africa (UWKSA) will be hosted at the Fish River Sun from March 17 to March 19. Madibaz judo star Matthew Chase was included in the South African student team after claiming two gold medals at the Ussa championships at NMMU's Missionvale Campus in Port Elizabeth over the weekend. Chase, who won gold in the U/60kg and U/66kg divisions, led his team to their first overall title in the annual competition contested by the country's top six tertiary institutions.
