Cataract surgeries to benefit less fortunate

Annually over 160 000 people are affected by cataracts which result in a slow progression from hazy and blurry vision to complete blindness if not treated correctly. Unfortunately many of these individuals do not have access to the right medical attention or are unaware of the opportunities for corrective surgery. “Proper eye care will ensure that the growth of a cataract is monitored regularly and if subsequently treated through surgery, will alter the patient’s standard of living,” said Elsabe Pretorius, Nursing Manager at Medical Forum Theatre.

Cataract surgery involves the removal of the affected lens, and the replacement thereof with an artificial one. The length of surgery depends on the progression of the cataract, but usually takes between 10 and 20 minutes. “The best part is when patients return for their post-op visits and can finally see more detail. It is exciting to know that we can make a difference in the way people look at the world,” said Pretorius.

The Port Elizabeth Eye and Laser Institute, established in May 1998, consists of 6 individual practices and is home to the Nelson Mandela Bay’s first private day hospital – the Medical Forum Theatre – dedicated not only to ophthalmic surgery and procedures, but to other surgical disciplines requiring admission to short stay surgical facilities and is an approved service provider to most medical aids

The resident ophthalmologists at the Eye and Laser Institute are all members of the Medical Association of South Africa and the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa and adhere to the strictest code of conduct and professionalism while treating patients using the latest techniques and modern technology.

The Port Elizabeth Eye and Laser Institute dedicated a day for free cataract surgeries, performed by the Institute’s resident ophthalmologists for the second year running. These operations which took place on Saturday, 20 October, were undertaken as part of the Institute’s commitment to the community it serves and in support of the annual National Eye Care Awareness month held during October every year. This initiative is undertaken in partnership with the Ophthalmology department of the PE Provincial Hospital who identified a select group of individuals in need.
