Dear Editor
The Democratic Alliance (DA) notes with concern the decision to cancel all Nelson Mandela Bay standing committee meetings until after a council meeting scheduled for mid-August.
The decision to cancel these meeting was announced today by the ANC speaker of council, Cllr Eugene Johnson.
The ANC/EFF/NA coalition has seemingly taken this decision out of fear that the new coalition government will not have the necessary majority allocation to standing committees and will ‘lose’ votes on key decisions because of this.
The DA believes this to be non-sensical. If standing committees do not meet, the municipality will not be able to take decisions on key service delivery issues. The residents of Nelson Mandela Bay are already struggling with the effects of extensive water and electricity outages and should not fall victim to further suffering due to issues within the current governing coalition.
I have reached out to the Speaker to implore her to reconsider and to put the needs of the people before petty politics. Residents cannot be made to suffer because the ANC/EFF/NA coalition is unable to sort out its own house.
The political instability that has followed after the current coalition hijacked our city has caused enough service delivery haemorrhage.
The DA will not allow the ANC, EFF and NA to use Nelson Mandela Bay as a platform to fight their personal battles, we will keep fighting for our residents and strive to get NMB working again.
Regards
Cllr Retief Odendaal
DA NMB Caucus Leader
