The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber said yesterday that it agrees that there are fundamental challenges in the tertiary education system in South Africa. The Business Chamber however does not believe that these challenges should be solved through the current unacceptable level of violence and destruction at the country’s universities.

As a business community the NMBBC believes the completion of the academic year at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) to be a national business imperative and on 21 October met with the Acting Vice Chancellor of NMMU Dr Sibongile Muthwa, as well as, the Dean of Students, Luthando Jack.

Due to the volatile situation on campus, the business community is hereby invited to assist the NMMU temporarily with conducting examinations and classes off campus in order to enable them to achieve their goal of completing the 2016 academic year.

This initiative will be coordinated by the Business Chamber companies are requested for urgent assistance with the following:

Inform NMBBC of the availability of venues suitable for lectures and examination purposes at your companies, preferably with digital technology (Wi-Fi, white boards or video-conferencing), but including private security on site.
The availability of temporary student housing, home stays or any other suitable accommodation to serve as safe havens for out-of-town students who would like to complete the academic year.
Food parcels to contribute to feeding out-of-town students who would like to complete the academic year.

The Business Chamber will compile this information in-house and share it with the university management in the strictest of confidentiality possible.

NMMU forms an integral part of the Eastern Cape and regional economy.
