PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa – Caltex Eastern Cape (CECM) has shown their support for development and education in the sport of surfing in South Africa by partnering with the City Surf Series™ in 2019.

After an outstanding first half of the professional surfing series already concluded, Caltex EC commended the team at Accelerate Sport; the event organisers and owners of the City Surf Series™

With the next City Surf Series event taking place at Pollok Beach, Summerstrand from this coming Thursday 13th June until Monday 17th June, the local community surfing programs are in for a treat at the Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing presented by Hurley thanks to the enthusiasm and support from Caltex EC.

The partnership helps to fund the Surfing South Africa (SSA) Learn to Surf Programs that have become an integral part of the City Surf Series™. These programs provide underprivileged youth in the coastal communities the opportunity to be part of an International event. The boys and girls, from surrounding surf outreach programs take part in a day of activities with accredited SSA coaches and program leaders as well as a community beach cleanup with members of the public, athlete’s and event staff.

Dedicated to uplifting and growing surf communities in all event locations, the City Surf Series™ gives back to the local surf community by working alongside the national controlling body of the sport – Surfing South Africa (SSA) and incorporating SSA Learn to Surf Initiatives which are designed to foster and encourage surfing among young people, regardless of their background.

Following on the highly successful City Surf Series hosted over the Easter weekend in Port Elizabeth and Port Alfred, CSI Partner, Caltex Eastern Cape (CECM) is full of praise of both the event organisers, participating teams from the various surf outreach programmes and the innovative environmental awareness drives that form part of the overall programme.

“We were impressed by the enthusiasm and dedication observed – the City Surf Series has created an excellent platform through which children from previously disadvantaged communities can now access surfing as a sport. In addition, we must commend their efforts to creating awareness, and buy in from the youth, around the importance of making our oceans a safer and cleaner place for the generations to come”.

“For us it is more than just being one of the top fuel providers in the Eastern Cape we take our responsibility to uplift the lives of our communities seriously – be it by supporting education, sport, healthy living or making a positive impact on the environment by introducing responsible practices,” said Pat Kelly, CECM COO.

“As business we should ensure that our communities and especially the youth, are given the chance to make this happen”.

Scheduled to take place in line with the SSA Learn To Surf Program is a community beach clean up at each competition site whereby the youth as well as members of the public are encouraged to get involved and help make an impact by picking up waste littered along the beach. Information will be shared on all CSS social media platforms, so that everyone can get involved in helping clean our beaches.

Collaborating with local NGO – Ocean Pledge – the kids will be educated about how to refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle single-use plastic and how the recycling bins work at the event.

Thanks to the local NSRI stations in each town that events are held – a water safety talk is part of the program as well and the kids learn about ocean safety and ocean awareness when at the beach. With drowning statistics at every 3 people out of 100 000, these talks are imperative to helping educate marginalized communities about how to be safe when at the beach.

2019 SSA Learn To Surf Programs:

• 22 June – Vic Bay Classic – George
