The IFP has made calls for the urgent suspension of the newly elected head of the Eastern Cape Treasury, Marion Mbina-Mthembu. She is implicated in the Nelson Mandela funeral scandal and has not undergone a security screening since 2011 after being the head of department.
“The MEC of Treasury, Mr. Sakhumzi Somyo, has to explain how he came to appoint a person who has admitted to not following proper procurement processes when authorising the release of money intended to help with Nelson Mandela’s memorial service. Ms. Mbina-Mthembu claims to have trusted the MEC responsible for organising the memorial service so that resulted in her not following procedure. We cannot allow a situation where corrupt individuals are rewarded with lucrative job opportunities because it means they will continue to misappropriate funds in the name of trust,” said IFP spokesperson on Finance, Ms Sibongile Nkomo,
“We demand that Marion Mbina-Mthembu undergone a security clearance process, failing which she must vacate her position. She must be suspended pending the investigation by the George Fivaz Forensic and Risk Investigators, as she was tasked to oversee and monitor the payments of funds on the matter of Madiba’s memorial service,” continued Nkomo.
“The Eastern Cape Premier must also provide answers about how the concerned head of department was awarded with five year contract. By employing her they are rewarding her corrupt actions, which flies in the face of claims made by government that they are fighting corruption – it is a case of rewarding corruption” concluded Nkomo.
