Calls for immediate forensic audit into unauthorised expenditure in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro

The IFP has issued calls for an immediate forensic investigation into alleged unauthorised expenditure by the office of the former Nelson Mandela Bay mayor, Zanoxolo Wayile who is currently an ANC Member of Parliament.

IFP Spokesperson on Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Peter Smith, MP, said; “Mr Wayile is said to have spent R270 000 on restaurants and entertainment in his last month in office as Mayor. If it is true, this expenditure is excessive in the extreme and must be investigated! Corruption and service delivery are mutually exclusive and that is why ANC-controlled municipalities are in such a mess. Unfortunately it is the people of South Africa that pay the price for this greed as they are the ones who remain without basic services.”

“We further call on the Acting Municipal Manager at Nelson Mandela Bay to urgently compile a comprehensive report detailing all unauthorised expenditure as there is the possibility of large-scale looting of public funds. Such abuses of are a veritable ‘corporate culture’ in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. This municipality alone accounted for R897 million in irregular- expenditure and received a qualified audit report. People are enriching themselves with public funds at the expense of those who have no water, sanitation, housing and electricity,” said Smith

The IFP has also called on the MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mlibo Qoboshiyane to also institute his own investigation into this matter and to ensure that the report is presented to the Chief Financial Officer without any further delay.
