Joining hands to create a lasting impact to St Albans Primary School

18 February 2025 by Guest Leave a Comment

Gqeberha – Isuzu Motors South Africa (ISUZU), in partnership with humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers, and the ELMA Relief Foundation, has officially handed over a fully refurbished St Albans Primary School, reaffirming its long-term commitment to community upliftment and education.

Since adopting the school in 2022, ISUZU has undertaken several initiatives to improve learning conditions for the 407 learners and 10 educators. The partnership began with the installation of an industrial borehole and water harvesting tanks to provide clean drinking water, benefitting both the school and the surrounding community.

In 2023, ISUZU marked Mandela Day at the school by pledging R1.2 million towards critical refurbishments, addressing infrastructure challenges such as broken windows, doors, dilapidated classrooms and electrical issues. Today, that promise has been fulfilled, with Gift of the Givers successfully completing the renovation work, including classroom refurbishments, tiling, painting, and the installation of electricity.

Speaking at the handover event, Isuzu Motors South Africa’s Vice President: Planning, Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Celestin Ndhlovu, highlighted the company’s dedication to social investment. “Education is the foundation for our future, and it is our collective responsibility to create environments that enable learners to thrive. Through this partnership, we are not only improving facilities but also fostering hope and opportunity for the children of St Albans Primary School.”

Gift of the Givers founder, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, emphasised the long-standing relationship with ISUZU and its impact on communities. “This project reflects the power of collaboration. Ensuring access to quality education and a safe learning environment is a key step in breaking the cycle of poverty. ISUZU has also played a major role in mitigating the on-going water crisis in the Eastern Cape by providing Gift of the Givers with four water tankers to deliver millions of litres of water to schools, clinics, hospitals, businesses and communities in multiple regions in the province. We are proud to work alongside ISUZU to create meaningful change.”

St Albans Primary School, Mercy Felix highlighted that the newly refurbished facility will go a long way in helping develop future generations. “Today, as we walk through these transformed hallways and classrooms, we feel a renewed sense of pride and motivation. It is with great joy and gratitude that we celebrate the incredible transformation of our school. What was once a vision has now become a reality – a beautiful, modern and inspiring learning environment that will benefit generations of learners to come.”

Beyond Gift of the Givers, other stakeholders, including the Elma Relief Foundation and local businesses, have contributed to making this initiative a success. ISUZU remains resolute in its commitment to education and social upliftment, with the St Albans project serving as the latest example of its dedication to creating meaningful and lasting change in communities.

As one of the renowned vehicle Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) in South Africa, ISUZU is proud of its long heritage and positive contribution to South Africa and the continent at large.

This is a demonstration of the company’s resilience, moulded through multiple transitions from General Motors and Delta, ultimately becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of ISUZU Motors Limited on 1 January 2018.

When General Motors exited the South Africa market in 2017, ISUZU MOTORS Limited decided to assume ownership of the assembly facility and associated facilities in South Africa. This ensured that the production of the vehicles which had been serving the African continent with distinction would continue. The decision by ISUZU MOTORS Limited demonstrated their long-term commitment to the South African economy and its workforce.

Billy Tom, ISUZU’s President, has been instrumental in steering the company through turbulent times, including the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. “ISUZU’s ability to stay resilient during industry transitions and the global crisis has been key to our success. We remain dedicated to the people who build our vehicles and the markets we serve across the African continent,” Tom said.

Billy Tom also emphasises ISUZU’s commitment to transformation. With a Level 1 B-BBEE status for five consecutive years, ISUZU has set a high standard for inclusivity and diversity within the automotive industry. “Our workforce reflects the makeup of South Africa. We are proud of our efforts in driving change both within ISUZU and in the broader community,” Tom noted.

Looking ahead, ISUZU is strategically positioning itself to take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement and grow its footprint across the continent. Tom’s vision includes transforming ISUZU to becoming a leader in sustainable business practices, combining reliability and creativity to achieve mutual growth in the African continent.

ISUZU’s journey of resilience and growth continues. This is built on the strength of its people, dedication to transformation and a vision for African growth. As part of its ongoing commitment to educating our future leaders about sustainability and preserving our local biodiversity, ISUZU MOTORS South Africa (ISUZU), in collaboration with Giving Them Wings Foundation, marked Arbor Week by creating two gardens in two primary schools, planting 600 indigenous plants and 200 spekboom.

This initiative, which benefits 1,095 learners at Astra Primary in Betheldorp, Gqeberha and 866 learners in Morojaneng Primary in Katlehong, Johannesburg focuses on raising awareness on climate change by creating carbon sinks, biodiversity conservation, and emphasising the importance of reducing carbon emissions. The newly planted gardens will serve as outdoor learning spaces, namely green classrooms, where learners can practically engage with the environment, enriching their education through hands-on interaction with nature. Another component of the project has been a keen focus on food security. A variety of crops have been planted using permaculture methods, which allow for food sustainability by working with nature.

“This garden will support us with teaching our learners valuable lessons about sustainability, conservation, and the environment. We are deeply grateful to ISUZU MOTORS South Africa and Giving Them Wings Foundation for this gift that will benefit our school for years to come,” said Mr Douglas Chirwa, principal at Morojaneng Primary School.

“This initiative is a game changer for our school, creating a beautiful, sustainable environment where our learners can connect with nature while enhancing their education. This garden will inspire our learners to become active participants in protecting and nurturing our planet,” said Mrs Helma Boggenpoel, Astra Primary School.

The project emphasises ISUZU’s dedication to empowering future generations with the knowledge and tools to protect the planet. Giving Them Wings Foundation will monitor the gardens for 12 months, while the schools integrate them into their curriculum, encouraging students to take ownership and utilise the spaces for ongoing learning. ISUZU plans to expand this initiative to other primary schools as part of the drive to combat climate change and promote biodiversity conservation.

“We’re not just planting trees; we’re planting knowledge and responsibility. This initiative is a tangible example of ISUZU’s commitment to building a sustainable future for our communities and the environment,” said Mr Lebogang Makoloi, ISUZU MOTORS South Africa Department Executive Corporate Affairs.

Vegetables and fruit will also be planted as a sustainable means to supplement the feeding scheme at the schools.
