Coega and Global Auxiliary Advance Nigerian Industrial Park Plans

11 December 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

The Coega Development Corporation (Coega) recently welcomed the Global Auxiliary of Companies’ (Global Aux) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Mika’il Ali Kote, to the Coega Special Economic Zone. The visit aimed to advance co-project development and technical advisory cooperation for Nigeria’s Gulu Integrated Agro-processing Industrial Park (GIAIP), under the umbrella of the Coega Africa Programme (CAP).

Building on the momentum of the South Africa-Nigeria Binational Commission (BNC) held in Cape Town on 28 November 2024, which aimed to enhance bilateral relations, Mr. Mika’il Ali Kote, CEO of Global Aux, expressed his enthusiasm about his visit to Coega.

“I have been anticipating this visit and engagement with Coega for a while. We are here to advance our initial partnership discussions relating to the Gulu Industrial Park and other developments in proximity to and into northern Nigeria. The ultimate objective is to replicate what Coega SEZ has achieved, but in Nigeria,” said Ali Kote.

Mr. Idriss Mouchili, CAP Director, emphasised the need for concrete action steps to advance the project in line with CAP’s mission to intensify business outreach efforts outside of South Africa. These steps include a site visit to assess project scope and feasibility, the formalisation of a Project Development and Management Agreement, the development of a comprehensive Project Master Plan, and the exploration of potential funding sources and requirements, to name a few.

Coega currently has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Global Aux, complemented by a Technical Partnership and Co-development Agreement. A Project Development and Management Agreement is anticipated in the near future.

Dr. Siyabonga Simayi, Coega’s Programme Director of Client Solutions, welcomed the partnership between Coega and Global Aux.

“As countries seek to enhance their competitiveness, the establishment of special economic zones and industrial parks has emerged as a key strategic tool for attracting sustainable investment and fostering economic development. Recently, Coega attended an SEZ conference in Kenya, where the importance of collaboration between African companies was emphasised.

We welcome this collaboration with Global Aux, and we are excited to engage with likeminded entities to improve continental integration,” said Simayi.
In conclusion, Coega is open to collaborating with African nations to address trade and investment challenges and create a conducive environment for business growth.

One of the safest cars in its segment

The Volkswagen Polo Vivo has been awarded a 4–star safety rating by the Global New Car Assessment Programme (Global NCAP). Global NCAP is a leading independent vehicle safety assessment organisation which promotes the universal adoption of the United Nation’s motor vehicle safety standards. The Global NCAP rating makes the new Polo Vivo one of the safest cars in its segment.

The Polo Vivo has firmly established itself as a leader in the entry-level hatch market since its local introduction in 2010. The Polo Vivo, which is locally developed and manufactured at the Kariega Plant in the Eastern Cape, has been South Africa’s best-selling passenger car since its introduction with over 500 000 units sold in the local market and Sub-Saharan Africa

“The Polo Vivo is one of the best-selling models in South Africa. It is therefore very satisfying to see the positive and constructive reaction from Volkswagen in offering safety feature improvements for the new version of the car,” said David Ward, Executive President of the Towards Zero Foundation.

The Polo Vivo, developed specifically for the African markets, underwent stringent testing in accordance with Global NCAP’s 2024 test assessment. The vehicle demonstrated exceptional performance achieving a 4-star rating in Adult Occupancy Protection (AOP) and a 3-star rating in Child Occupancy Protection (COP) categories.

Key active and passive safety features which contributed to the Polo Vivo’s 4-star rating include:

  • Driver and passenger seat belt recognition with audible warning
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Dual front airbags for driver and passenger
  • Front side airbags (head & chest protection) – optional in Life derivatives and standard in Style as well as GT derivatives

The new Polo Vivo also met Global NCAP’s requirements for:

  • Child seat types and ISOFIX

“Volkswagen’s commitment to safety is unwavering, and this recognition underscores our dedication to providing our customers with reliable and safe vehicles. The impressive performance in Global NCAP’s rigorous testing protocol demonstrates the level of active and passive safety features available in the new Polo Vivo,“ said Niels Wichmann, Brand Head of Volkswagen Passenger Cars.

Championing Human Rights for an Equitable World

As the world commemorates International Human Rights Day today, under the theme “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” the Coega Development Corporation (Coega) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to upholding human rights and promoting social justice. This significant day marks the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, a cornerstone document that enshrines the fundamental rights and freedoms of all individuals, writes Mr. Craig Luckman, Coega’s Acting Unit Head of Human Resources.

International Human Rights Day serves as a call to action, urging individuals to be vigilant defenders of human rights and to advocate for equality and justice. This can be achieved through education, advocacy, and promoting the advancement of marginalised and vulnerable groups. It is a time for reflection on the progress made in the protection of human rights, and a commitment to address the ongoing challenges and injustices that persist.

As a responsible corporate citizen, Coega is deeply committed to upholding human rights principles and promoting social justice. The organisation’s strategy is aligned with these values, emphasising equality, respect, and inclusivity in the workplace. By fostering a positive and inclusive work environment, Coega empowers its employees to reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to the organisation’s success.

At Coega, we prioritise fair labour practices, ensuring equitable compensation and benefits for all employees. The organisation is also committed to providing equal opportunities for career advancement and professional development, regardless of gender, race, or background.

Coega’s strategy is deeply rooted in the principles of Human Rights with a focus on promoting equality and respect within the workplace. The Corporation strives to create an inclusive and diverse work environment, fosterrespect among employees, and support initiatives that promote human rights and social justice within communities. Coega is also dedicated to conducting its business operations in a manner that respects and upholds the rights of all individuals, including employees, stakeholders, and the broader society.

The protection of human rights and promotion of social inclusion are essential contributors to good corporate governance. Coega recognises this and subscribes to several ISO standards and the King IV Code on Corporate Governance, which espouse these values. Moreover, human rights are central to the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) support for achieving the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. The Agenda 2030 seeks to realise the human rights of all and envisions a world of universal respect for human rights and human dignity.

As we commemorate International Human Rights Day, we are reminded that all people have rights, and all employees have rights. With this comes the responsibility to respect the rights of others, as well as the regulatory and contractual boundaries within which we all operate.

In conclusion, Coega remains dedicated to creating a safe and dignified workspace for its employees, within reasonable boundaries as it pertains to issues of good governance and legislative compliance as a public entity.

Buckets of Blessings

As the festive season brings people together, ISUZU MOTORS South Africa, in partnership with Rise Against Hunger NPO and Love Story NPC, continued its tradition of making a meaningful difference in the communities it serves. Through the ISUZU CARES: I CARE TOO employee volunteerism drive, ISUZU employees came together to pack and deliver 400 “Buckets of Blessings,” filled with essential grocery items, to communities in need. The bulk groceries were procured through Feed the Nation Foundation PBO, which contributed R50 000 towards the food hampers.

This year, 200 buckets were packed by ISUZU’s Johannesburg-based employees and delivered to four Early Childhood Development Centres in Diepsloot, namely Sunshine Pre-School, Mother’s Love Daycare Centre, Green Pastures Daycare Centre and Siyakhula Daycare Centre.

Another 200 buckets, packed by employees in Gqeberha, were distributed to two local charities that support vulnerable families in the area, namely Soup Kitchen Ministries in the Northern Areas and Ekuphumleni Joe Slovo Community Project.

“On behalf of Sunshine Daycare and the Diepsloot community, I want to express our heartfelt gratitude to ISUZU MOTORS South Africa. Your generous support has made a significant difference, ensuring that the children have food on the table during the December holidays when the school is closed. We deeply appreciate your efforts and the vital role you played in bringing hope to our community,” said Ms Sylvia Khalushi, Assistant Principal at Sunshine Daycare.

The Buckets of Blessings initiative reflects ISUZU’s commitment to making a difference, and supporting communities in need during the festive season, guided by the belief that even small gestures can have a significant impact.

“At ISUZU, it is important that we engage with communities to address societal challenges. This includes partnering with strategic partners in shared value initiatives” said Lebogang Makoloi, Executive: Corporate Affairs at ISUZU MOTORS South Africa. “The Buckets of Blessings initiative is about more than just providing grocery essentials—it’s about extending hope, dignity, and compassion to those who need it most during the festive season. This work is driven by the incredible spirit of our employees, who willingly give their time to make a difference.”

For ISUZU employees, the ISUZU CARES; I CARE TOO campaign is a platform to live out the company’s values through hands-on action. From packing to delivering the buckets, their efforts demonstrate the profound impact that collective kindness can achieve.

ISUZU extends its gratitude to its employees and community partners for making this initiative possible and wishes all South Africans a joyful, safe, and blessed holiday season.

Gqeberha, South Africa, 04 December 2024 – The Coega Development Corporation (Coega) hosted its 2024 local roadshow at the Coega Vulindlela Accommodation and Conference Centre (VACC), in Gqeberha today. The “Transform Your Community, Transform Your Life” themed event brought together 200 participants, inspiring them to unlock the potential and value of Coega-led projects and opportunities.

Mr. Andile April, Coega’s Communications and Stakeholder Relations Manager, remarked on the success of the local stakeholder roadshow.

“It was a valuable opportunity to connect with our stakeholders, local communities and business owners, to discuss exciting development opportunities underway at Coega. We look forward to building on these strong relationships and continuing to drive growth and innovation in the region with the communities we serve,” said April.

Registered attendees, comprising the business fraternity, local community members and key stakeholders gained valuable insights into the Coega SEZ’s investment promotion strategies, infrastructure development opportunities, supply chain and B-BBEE processes, SMME development and support programmes, skills training initiatives, catalytic corporate social investment projects, and labour recruitment procedures.

Several major projects were showcased in terms of SMME procurement spend, labour absorption within the SEZ, skills development opportunities and infrastructure projects being implemented, including the Coega Return Effluent Scheme, Stellantis Manufacturing Plant, Bulk Sewer Project, and various public infrastructure projects for fencing and facilities.

Local Gqeberha businessman, Mr. Arthur Dayimani, described his experience at the Coega Stakeholder Roadshow as informative. “The session was quite informative. From the information received, businesspeople have a better idea of how to do business with Coega. We hope the issues we’ve raised will assist Coega in helping us grow our businesses. We look forward to sessions like this in the future,” shared Dayimani.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Councillor, Mr. Bubele Matenjwa, concluded with sentiments about the importance of local stakeholder engagements in the broader scheme of sustainable socio-economic development.

“We appreciate Coega for hosting this stakeholder engagement. When the President announced that we are establishing special economic zones, Coega was mandated to attract investment. However, they also execute the additional responsibility of skills and SMME development to benefit local communities. The feedback that we as government receive from engagements like this improves our ability to better address challenges and leverage opportunities within local communities. Thank you to everyone who has participated today,” said Cllr. Matenjwa.

Coega is committed to engaging with stakeholders to ensure the success and sustainability of projects and initiatives in line with its vision to be the leading catalyst for the championing of socio-economic development.

MOU Between Coega and DALRRD Leads to Jobs

4 December 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

The Coega Development Corporation (Coega) and the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, today, celebrated the graduation and enhanced employability of over 30 National Rural Youth Service Corps (NARYSEC) trainees at the Coega Business Centre, in Gqeberha. This milestone is the outcome of successful collaboration between Coega and the DALRRD following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in April 2024.

Following the signing of the MoU, the cohort of graduate artisans is the first to successfully qualify as maintenance and repair workers through the Coega Skills Development Centre (SDC), with close to 50% securing opportunities through Coega’s infrastructure development portfolio and three being absorbed by the contractor.

Ms. Nomtandazo Moyo, DALLRD Deputy Director-General, expressed her excitement at the positive outcome of the long-standing partnership between Coega and the DALRRD.

“The partnerships between DALRRD, Coega and other stakeholders are important, not only in the context of development in general, but they are a positive indicator of being responsive, effective, and sustainable in ultimately contributing to the wellbeing and prosperity of the youth here today. They will become leaders of industries and contribute to the local economy,” said Moyo.

Funded by the DALRRD, the graduates underwent a 14-week accredited course in general maintenance and repairing at the Coega SDC, earning 82 credits toward a National Qualification Framework qualification.

Ms. Mokgaetši Sebothoma, Coega’s Executive Manager for Corporate Services, under which the Coega SDC resides, remarked on the importance of artisanal and vocational training in the broader scheme of socio-economic development: “The Coega Skills Development Centre offers training programmes that are designed to address the skills gap and create employment opportunities. By equipping individuals with in-demand skills, we are empowering them to contribute to the economy and improve their livelihoods.”

NARYSEC Training Programme Graduate, Ms. Zodwa Mfama, shared her experience: “I am grateful to my mentors for supporting me on this journey. It was a challenging experience, and I wanted to give up. However, it worked out in the end. I am here today employed, and I am able to put food on the table at home,” said Mfama.

The aim of Coega’s skills development courses is to empower unemployed youth by enhancing their employability and fostering entrepreneurial potential. Funding is a key enabler for the Coega SDC to execute its training mandate. Currently, the SDC solicits funding in the form of conditional grants from various SETAs. When funding is approved, Coega’s Recruitment and Placement Unit scouts the Gateway-2-Opportunity (G2O) database for suitable candidates. Public and private sector entities can enlist the services of the SDC on a fee-for-service basis.

Words that the Chamber Cannot Use in Connection With the Latest Petrol Price Adjustments

3 December 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

EDITOR:

  1. Before you read the latest response from the Nelson Mandela Bay Chamber of Commerce to our City and all it’s fuel users ONCE AGAIN being penalised for an action that was NOT CAUSED by them….. Let me use the words that everyone else is using; “We are being SCREWED by Transnet who in addition DO NOT take responsibility for the damage to our roads by the hundreds of Manganese Trucks daily are also very CAVALIER with our health and the health of of tourism industry by refusing to remove the Manganes Ore Dump AND the Fuel Tank Farm from a prime piece of land that was GIFTED to them by the City!”
  2. Add the estimated R50 Million in additional monthly fuel cost to the estimated R24 Million monthly we continue to pay as a result of the Punitive Water Tariffs that the municipality REFUSES to lift and you can see why this festive season will not be so!

Now, here follows Chamber CEO Denise van Huyssteen’s response to the fuel pricing adjustments announced today:

“The Chamber notes with concern that the latest fuel pricing adjustments (effective 04 December 2024) continue to penalise Nelson Mandela Bay consumers for the cost of hauliers transporting fuel via road from East London, due to the berth at the Port Elizabeth port not being operational.” “It is our understanding that completion of the repair of the berth, which was planned for the 6th of December, has been revised to the 11th of December. It remains unclear however by exactly when the fuel berth will become fully operational again.”

“We estimate that since the rezoning of Nelson Mandela Bay as an inland zone in October of this year, an irrecoverable direct loss to the local economy of approximately R50 million per month has been incurred. Following tomorrow’s fuel price adjustment local consumers will accumulatively be paying R2.49 more per litre for 95 unleaded fuel, diesel and paraffin versus what they would have paid if the area was still a coastal zone.”

“It is our view that the additional costs incurred to date in transporting these fuels into the area by road has been unfairly passed on to businesses, consumers, commuters and local communities. None of these key stakeholders were consulted prior to the rezoning by the Minister of Minerals and Petroleum Products. Businesses, consumers, commuters and local communities have been made to bear the brunt of a shipping vessel accident, not caused by them, by paying inflated prices for fuel and indirectly for other goods and services.”

“We believe that this pricing structure is supposed to be temporary in nature, and that once the fuel berth is repaired, the area will return back to its former allotted zone. We therefore urge the relevant role players to accelerate efforts in this regard to ensure that Nelson Mandela Bay can be reinstated as a coastal fuel pricing zone from January 2025,” Van Huyssteen concludes.

Background information

The fuel berth at the Port Elizabeth Port was damaged in June of this year, resulting in industry hauliers having to transport fuel via road from East London to Nelson Mandela Bay.

The Department of Minerals and Petroleum Resources, in response to the additional costs associated with transporting the fuel to the metro, then decided to implement revised transport tariffs in October, November and now December 2024 for petrol, diesel and paraffin for Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding areas.  This resulted in interim zone changes in the affected areas, to allow the industry hauliers to recover their fuel transportation costs.

In the best interests of our members, consumers and communities, the Chamber took action by filing an urgent review application in October, to gain access to the information which informed the Minister’s decision and have since received the record of decision from the Department.

From the records received it would appear that the Minister did not consider any other options to mitigate the impact of the issue on consumers, but rather focused solutions on addressing the additional transport supply costs and the recovery thereof.

More over we remain concerned, that this potentially creates a precedent for the state to simply transfer its obligations to innocent parties without taking accountability and without regard to the right to administrative justice which is enshrined in our Constitution.

While we have achieved success in putting pressure on the Minister, as well as Transnet to accelerate the repair of the berth at the Port Elizabeth Port and return the metro back to being part of a coastal pricing zone, we are extremely disappointed that consumers and businesses continue to carry additional costs through the fuel price adjustments to fund this.  It casts doubt that the berth, which is earmarked to be repaired by the 6 th of December, may potentially not achieve this deadline.

As we are a non-profit organisation, the Chamber decided to reach a settlement with the Minister, whereby through a court order it has been agreed that Nelson Mandela Bay will revert back to being part  of the coastal zone once the berth is operational again.  The Minister was not willing to make this adjustment for the December fuel price adjustment, indicating the low confidence levels in the berth becoming operational timeously and which has since become a reality with the completion date being moved forward.

Provincial World Aids Day

2 December 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

Gqeberha, South Africa, 01 December 2024 – The Coega Development Corporation (Coega) joined the Eastern Cape Provincial Government to commemorate World Aids Day at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium, in Mdantsane today. This year’s commemoration, led by the Deputy President and Chairperson of the South African National Aids Council (SANAC), H.E Paul Mashatile, the SANAC Civil Society Forum Chairperson, Hon. Solly Nduku, the SANAC Private Sector Forum Chairperson, Hon. Nompumelelo Zikalala, the Minister of Health, Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, the Eastern Cape Premier, Hon. Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, and the Executive Mayor, Cllr. Babalwa Lobishe was centered on the theme Equal Rights, Equal Care.

The primary goal of the event was to advocate for equal rights and equitable healthcare access for all, particularly in the context of HIV/AIDS. The event sought to empower communities through local awareness campaigns, encourage individuals to prioritise their health by undergoing HIV testing, and promote safer behaviours to prevent HIV transmission.

Deputy President, H.E Paul Mashatile during his keynote address on World AIDS Day, highlighted South Africa’s commitment to achieving an AIDS-free world.

“Our country remains the epicentre of HIV and is among those with the highest TB burden. There are nearly 8 million people living with HIV, and TB remains the leading cause of death, claiming around 56,000 lives a year. As of June 2024, only 79% of people who knew their status were on treatment, and only 93% of people on treatment were virally suppressed.

We need to further increase HIV screening, diagnosis, and treatment initiation while maintaining treatment adherence to keep its viral suppression rates high. I would like to urge all the Premiers to make use of the Provincial Councils on AIDS to mobilise these sectors and others that are active in the provinces to help us find over 1 million people.

Our approaches must be comprehensive, targeted, inclusive, and geo-specific,” said H.E Mashatile.”

The Eastern Cape Premier, Hon. Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, shared the progress the country has made in a fight against HIV/AIDS.

“As we commemorate World AIDS Day, I am proud to announce that the Eastern Cape has achieved a significant 54% decline in AIDS-related deaths. This remarkable progress is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our healthcare workers, community leaders, and all those involved in the response.

We are reminded that our work is far from over. We must continue to work tirelessly to ensure that everyone has access to quality healthcare and HIV services. We owe it to ourselves, our communities, and future generations to keep pushing forward towards an AIDS-free world,” said Hon. Mabuyane.

The gathering brought together diverse stakeholders to explore innovative strategies to enhance awareness, prevention, and support initiatives. The event featured a range of activities, including keynote addresses, panel discussions, and exhibitions to educate and empower community members.

Ms. Phumela Hoza, Coega’s SHE Project Manager, highlighted Coega’s participation in the Annual World AIDS Day Commemoration.

“By attending this event, We reaffirmed our commitment to Sustainable Development Goals, including good health and well-being (SDG 3), promoting gender equality (SDG 5), reducing inequalities (SDG 10), and fostering partnerships for the goals (SDG 17).

Coega has made a notable impact as a trusted Infrastructure Implementing Agent of Choice for the Eastern Cape Department of Heat through Coega’s Department of Health Infrastructure Programme to enhance the quality of life for South Africans, “ she said.

This year’s observance aligns with the 30 Years of Freedom and Democracy celebrations. Over the past three decades, South Africa has made significant progress in advancing equal rights, promoting health equity, and ensuring access for everyone.

Coega reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the well-being of the community and the promotion of public health. As a responsible corporate citizen, Coega recognises the significance of addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic and advocating for equal rights and equal care for all individuals.

Chamber marks 160th anniversary

2 December 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

Friday, 29 November 2024, marked a historical milestone as the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber toasted its 160th anniversary during its Annual Banquet held at the Sun Boardwalk Hotel and Convention, which was attended by 850 guests. The banquet is the Chamber’s largest flagship event which provides an opportunity to reflect on progress achieved in the year and to recognise and show appreciation for the contributions of its members.

Delivering his speech during the event, Chamber President Siyolo Dick highlighted the transformative changes the Chamber has undergone in the last three years, shifting from a traditional role to an action orientated and interventionist approach.

“As we reflect on this, the Chamber has evolved overtime as the business environment changed. However, we are now at a point where change is happening so fast that we are leaping from evolution to revolution. We are working off a clean slate and are making it up as we go along, aligned along common values and goals, all focused on positive change and making a difference,” Dick said.

Dick also emphasised that the business community could no longer stand on the sidelines and complain, and wait for government and politicians to do the right thing. “I’m happy that this Chamber has been trailblazing an alternative path through our efforts to resurge the Bay. We have been rolling up our sleeves to help get things done and providing technical expertise where we can. We do this because we know if the basics are working, the investment and employment will automatically flow from this,” he says.

He further elaborated that the Chamber believed in the immense potential of Nelson Mandela Bay and this was reflected in its drive to unlock the Bay of Opportunity.

Dick said “We believe in our Bay and its people, and are pushing to make sure that our priorities, such as the two ports and the North to South rail corridor, are on the national agenda. As the Chamber, we will collaborate with whoever is committed to doing the right thing.”

Chamber chief executive officer Denise van Huyssteen echoed this vision, praising the critical role played by member companies and their employees in enabling the Chamber to accelerate its efforts and impact this year.

“It is clear to me that the strength of our Bay is our amazing people and this is what sets us apart from anywhere else. Yes we have challenges but we have a united business community who are prepared to take action to achieve common goals,” said Van Huyssteen.

She called for continued mobilisation, collaboration and action to accelerate the impact of key Chamber initiatives, as it radically shifts from “evolution to revolution” to unlock the potential of the Bay of Opportunity.

Chamber awards various leaders for their commitment to creating an enabling environment in the Bay

2 December 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber awarded outstanding leaders from its geographical clusters and task teams yesterday for volunteering their time and expertise to help create an enabling environment in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Commenting on the recognitions, Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber chief executive officer Denise van Huyssteen said that the Chamber’s success with its action orientated approach in various key initiatives has been achieved due to the incredible work of volunteers.

“Often this work happens behind the scenes, without the individuals seeking any recognition. In fact, I would venture to say the biggest asset which we have in the Bay is our people. We may have wide urban sprawl but if you look at the way the Chamber has been able to mobilise the business community into action, we really have achieved something special and remarkable,” said Van Huyssteen.

Among the award recipients, Paola Horak, Director of Grindstone Property Management, received the Operational Sustainability Award for her extensive involvement in getting the clusters off the ground and supporting their key initiatives Tati Tsunke, Chairperson of the Beachfront Cluster and General Manager of the Boardwalk Hotel, was recognised for his exemplary leadership in driving collaboration and action.

Angus Clark, Struandale Cluster Lead and Senior Manager at Isuzu Motors, was commended for helping to address infrastructure challenges related to electricity outages. David Mertens also received recognition for his work on municipal electricity tariffs, successfully mitigating substantial increases that would have impacted domestic and industrial users. His intervention resulted in savings of well over R600 million for the current tariff year.

Basil Mugwagwa and Gary Koekemoer were honored for their leadership in helping to improve the metro’s sanitation system through collaboration with the municipality. Mugwagwa is the Lead for the Water and Sanitation Task Team and currently the Head of Engineering at Aspen Pharmacare. Koekemoer is a Climate Change Consultant and the Lead for the Chamber’s Low Carbon Economy workstream for the Local Economy Reinvention Think Tank. “Their work included an assessment of the system, the development of plans to address issues and ongoing technical support. This resulted in driving the improvement in the efficiency of the system from 15% to over 80%,” said Van Huyssteen.

Kelvin Naidoo, the Overall Think Tank Lead and Quinton Uren, the Co-Lead, both received Visionary Awards for demonstrating strategic vision and dedication which has enabled the Think Tank to progress, while ensuring that the various volunteers working in the various workstreams are getting ahead of the curve. This is critical to saving and creating investment and jobs in our local manufacturing economy.

Naidoo is the Vice President of the Chamber and currently Technical Director at Auto X. Uren leads the Altermotive workstream and is the Managing Director of Jendamark.

“These recognitions underscore the Chamber’s commitment to mobilising the business community for positive change in Nelson Mandela Bay. To all the winners today, we would like to extend our warm gratitude for the sterling work you do for the Chamber as this aligns with our vision of positioning the metro as the Bay of Opportunity,” Van Huyssteen concluded.

The Chamber also handed out the Entrepreneur of the Year award to The Eco Laundry as the 2024 winner. The business provides environmentally conscious laundry services through energy-efficient and self-heating machines with advanced aqua-mixer technology that allows the company to reduce water and energy consumption. The owner, Michiko Mavunga, received various prizes, from MTN and Action Coach, including a R100 000 grant funding towards the purchase of equipment and machinery sponsored by Standard Bank.

To date, the Chamber has established eleven clusters, all driven by a team of committed business leaders from a common geographical area who come together to address operational problems within the sectors of the Bay. Task Teams run by the Chamber cover the priority areas of electricity, water, sanitation, transport and logistics, disaster management, safety and security and business enablement.
