Wings and Wishes head completes 25 big walks for cancer

10 November 2023 by Guest Leave a Comment

GQEBERHA – It is her love and compassion for people who are fighting cancer that inspires Inge Human, Manager of charity organisation, Wings and Wishes, to participate in every Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer over the past 25 years.

The Gqeberha based social worker said she spent her entire career working for non-profit organisations (NPOs), and she understands the financial constraints. However, to her the Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer is more than just a fundraiser. “The five-kilometre walk is such an emotional journey and a true celebration of life. You see the thousands of people, everyone with their own personal story. Some are celebrating victory over cancer; others walk in memory of someone that courageously fought the battle and will never be forgotten. The Big Walk shows them, you are not alone!” she said.

Wings and Wishes is one of the beneficiaries of the 2023 Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer, alongside Reach for a Dream. Human explained that Wings and Wishes was established out of a real need to get children from the Eastern Cape to the paediatric oncology unit at Red Cross Hospital in Cape Town. “At that time there was no oncology unit in the Eastern Cape and children travelled to Red Cross Hospital for treatment,” said Human.

She said children who are affected with life-threatening illnesses travelling from rural areas are often at a disadvantage due to limited access to treatment. “The biggest challenge is that the Eastern Cape is extremely rural across a vast province with expert medical care for children requiring oncology, only available at Frere Hospital in East London or PE Provincial Hospital in Gqeberha,” said Human.

However, the services of Wings and Wishes are not limited to the Eastern Cape. The organisation provides transport support to children across all nine provinces.

It is Human’s journey with Wings and Wishes that motivates her to celebrate life every day and participating in charity events is one such blessing. “I realise how blessed I am and that I have nothing to complain about. This encourages me to always be kind, as you never know the battles others are fighting and your kind word or smile might just be the motivation they need to keep going on,” said Human.

The Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer donation to Wings and Wishes will ensure that the organisation can continue booking flights or bus tickets for children and their caregivers.

They also receive a snack pack and toiletries for the journey.

Meanwhile the support to Reach for a Dream includes the purchase of laptops and tablets which will provide dreamers the opportunity to connect with their families while in hospital, do research as well as complete school assignments, learn, and develop as they will resultantly have access to the world.

The Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer donation facility is still open on the radio station’s website. Donations will be channelled to the beneficiaries.

Coega Supports the Department of Employment and Labour to Empower Previously Disadvantaged Communities

8 November 2023 by Guest Leave a Comment

Gqeberha, South Africa, 8 November 2023 – In an effort to promote accessibility and proximity of services such as skills development and training opportunities, the Department of Employment and Labour, last week, organised a pop-up career exhibition at the George Botha Community Sports Centre in KwaNoxolo, Bethelsdorp, Gqeberha. The Career Exhibition aimed to provide career guidance and opportunities to unemployed individuals seeking employment, and brought together various government entities, automotive groups, Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), and institutions of higher learning.

The event featured key stakeholder representatives from the Coega Development Corporation (Coega), the National Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, Working on Fire, Local Government SETA, Wholesale and Retail SETA, the Department of Higher Education and Training, South African Police Services (SAPS) and the Walter Sisulu University (WSU), who imparted valuable information on career development and training opportunities during the event.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Vukile Sityana from the Department of Employment and Labour, shared valuable information about the benefits of the event, stating that career and skills development exhibitions serve as valuable platforms for communities to gain access to various services and opportunities related to skills development and career advancement.
“By bringing key stakeholders together in a centralised location, these events provide an interactive and engaging environment for attendees. The Exhibition format allows individuals to explore different options, connect with experts, and make informed decisions about their career paths. One of the primary benefits of such exhibitions is the increased accessibility of services. Often, individuals residing in remote areas or disadvantaged communities face barriers to accessing information and resources related to skills development.”

Mr. Unathi Dasi, Assistant Director: Human Capital Investment at the National Department of Public Works and Infrastructure said: “We were invited by the Department of Employment and Labour to offer our support in disseminating information about employment opportunities. During our visit, we had the privilege of sharing information with the community regarding various opportunities within the field of public works, including those within the domains of construction, property management, and related fields. To facilitate access to our services, we prepared comprehensive career leaflets, catering to those interested in pursuing their studies at TVET colleges or higher education institutions. Furthermore, our department maintains a nationwide database for registration, enabling individuals to access the numerous opportunities available within our department.”

Mr. Envor Wesso, Coega Training Manager: Human Capital Solutions, expressed Coega’s commitment to socio-economic development through training and job creation: “In our pursuit to foster creative development for the youth and address unemployment, Coega has established a Skills Development Centre to oversee skills and training programmes alignedwith national development objectives, encompassing technical vocational education and training, alongside STEM-related initiatives. These programmes serve as a pivotal force in addressing socio-economic challenges, by granting unemployed youth the means to access gainful employment or embark on entrepreneurial endeavours.

Coega’s offerings include diverse skills programmes, ranging from Trade Tests to apprenticeships in the fields of plumbing, bricklaying, carpentry, electrical work, welding, joinery, and more. Notably, in 2022/23 Financial Year, Coega offered training to a commendable 3,932 individuals, leaving a substantial imprint on the lives of young individuals and local communities. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the community for their support and encourage them to register on the Gateway to Opportunities (G2O) database, a gateway to propel their careers.”

The accessibility of the Exhibition enabled community members, including youth, adults, and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to explore diverse career options and understand the steps required to pursue their chosen paths. The event served as a catalyst for inspiration, motivation, and self-discovery, instilling a sense of hope and ambition amongst attendees.

Furthermore, the Exhibition facilitated partnerships and potential collaborations between community members and stakeholders that may address the urgent need for local employment.

Celebrating 100 Years in South Africa

8 November 2023 by Guest Leave a Comment

Ford has a long and proud legacy in South Africa, established in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) in November 1923 as first global manufacturer to set up local vehicle production.

Ford Motor Company is celebrating its proud 100-year legacy in South Africa with the announcement of a R5.2 billion (US$272 million) investment in its local operations for production of the first-ever Ford Ranger Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV).

Ford is also marking this historic milestone with the reveal of an expanded product range that will soon be available to its South African customers. The line-up comprises the all-electric Mustang Mach-E, the exciting seventh-generation Mustang range (which will include the most powerful naturally aspirated Mustang ever – the Mustang Dark Horse), the all-new Territory five-seater SUV, and the next-generation Tourneo and Transit Custom.

Additional derivatives of the country’s top-selling double cab pickup and current South African Car of the Year are being previewed prior to their upcoming local launch, comprising the adventure-oriented Ranger Tremor and the Ranger Platinum – the most luxurious Ranger ever.

“This is a momentous occasion as we celebrate Ford’s Centenary in South Africa,” said Elena Ford, Chief Dealer Engagement officer, Ford Motor Company. “From humble beginnings that established Ford in South Africa in November 1923, our team and facilities here have grown into a world-class operation that delivers the highest-quality vehicles to our customers in South Africa and around the world.

“It reinforces our family-company beliefs and values that continue to guide our business and are a source of pride for the families who have worked here for generations, the dealers who have been the face of the brand for decades, and our loyal customers who embody the enthusiasm for the Blue Oval,” Elena Ford said.

Along with continuing to invest in vehicles and facilities in South Africa, Ford Motor Company is deeply committed to building a better world. Empowering and uplifting communities is central to this ethos and it’s a topic that is very important to Ford Motor Company and its philanthropic arm, the Ford Motor Company Fund. Mary Culler, president of the Ford Fund, said: “Along with our already extensive range of community projects in South Africa, I am proud to launch three far-reaching education projects as part of the Centenary celebrations that will create a lasting legacy for thousands of young people in this wonderful country.”

In keeping with the 100th anniversary celebration theme, Ford and its project partners are creating 100 maths and science laboratories for primary schools around the country, building 100 early childhood development (ECD) centres, and funding 100 youth scholarships to promote learning in the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths.

Investment for Ranger Plug-in Hybrid

Ford Motor Company is investing R5.2 billion (US$272 million) in the Silverton Assembly Plant for production of the first-ever Ranger Plug-in Hybrid, commencing in late 2024.

The investment for the plug-in hybrid version of the Ranger incorporates a new battery pack assembly plant that is being constructed within the Silverton plant for the PHEV system. Ford’s Chassis Plant in the Tshwane Automotive Special Economic Zone (TASEZ) is also being upgraded to accommodate the unique chassis configuration for this model, including changes to the robots, welding equipment, control systems, conveyors and skids.

Furthermore, the vehicle assembly operations are being adapted to accommodate the Ranger Plug-in Hybrid, specifically on the Trim, Chassis and Final (TCF) line. This includes changes to the handling equipment, turnover fixtures, charging systems, leak detection and testing equipment, as well as a new repair area.

“The additional investment in the Silverton Assembly Plant for the Ranger Plug-in Hybrid takes our total manufacturing investment in South Africa over the past 14 years to around $1.72 billion, or nearly R33 billion,” says Andrea Cavallaro, Operations director, Ford International Markets Group. “It signals our commitment to the country, our employees and our extensive supplier network.”

Ford currently employs approximately 5,200 people in South Africa. The local operations support around 60,000 jobs in the total value chain amongst supplier companies and contributes more than 1 percent to South Africa’s GDP.

Along with the new battery facility and plant upgrades required for the Ranger Plug-in Hybrid, the Paint Shop is being revamped to further improve paint quality and first time through (FTT) for all vehicles produced in South Africa. This will guarantee the highest levels of customer satisfaction and consistently deliver the required production volumes. The Silverton Assembly Plant has an installed capacity to produce 720 vehicles per day over three shifts, or 200,000 vehicles per year.

“As with the current Ranger models, the new Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will be exported to Europe as part of our commitment to offer a wide range of powertrain options for customers in this important mid-size pickup segment,” Cavallaro says. “For the first time in about two decades the Silverton plant will also be supplying vehicles to Australia and New Zealand, as it will be the source market for the Ranger Plug-in Hybrid for these countries.”

The Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will deliver more torque than any other Ranger, thanks to a 2.3-litre Ford EcoBoost turbo petrol engine paired with an electric motor and rechargeable battery system. It can be driven in pure electric mode for more than 45 kilometres without using a drop of fuel or producing tailpipe emissions, helping customers save at the pump and reduce their environmental impact.

It will provide all the towing and payload capability customers expect of Ranger, along with Pro Power Onboard for the first time, enabling customers to power their tools and appliances on a worksite or remote campsite by plugging them into power outlets embedded in both the cargo bed and the cabin. This will ensure Ranger owners will have the power they need for both work and play.

Expanding product portfolio

“Today we are reaffirming our commitment to providing distinctive products and services for our customers in South Africa, supported by always-on relationships and an ever-improving user experience,” says Kay Hart, president, Ford International Markets Group.

“We will be adding two new models to the Ranger line-up, which is proudly built in South Africa and exported to more than 100 markets,” Hart says. “As the first pickup to win the South African Car of the Year title in 2023, along with a long list of awards around the world, Ranger is an integral part of Ford’s success, and reinforces the brand’s proud heritage of producing segment-defining pickup vehicles.”

Following the recent local launch of the adventure-ready Ranger Wildtrak X, Ford will soon be introducing the Ranger Tremor using the same basic recipe, as it is aimed at customers who require enhanced capability in challenging off-road conditions. Tremor is based on the hard-working XLT series and incorporates a substantially reworked chassis with wider track and higher ground clearance, along with Bilstein Position-Sensitive Dampers and off-road focused driver assistance systems as standard.

The upcoming Ranger Platinum is positioned above the popular Wildtrak models and raises luxury and comfort to a new level in the Ranger family, as well as for the local pickup segment. It is aimed at customers who appreciate the premium levels of comfort and technology from high-end road cars, but who rely on the toughness and all-round productivity that consistently make Ranger the double cab leader in South Africa.

“Our all-new Tourneo Custom is set to raise the bar in the multi-activity vehicle segment, combining a new platform engineered for maximum versatility and comfort which makes it an ideal choice for personal use and business customers,” Hart says. Tourneo Custom features an optimised vehicle platform that delivers generous cabin space. Standard and long wheelbase models each offer three rows of seating for up to nine occupants, delivering next-level practicality across the range.

Europe’s top-selling van and last year’s best-selling vehicle overall in the UK, the all-new Transit Custom, is heading to South Africa and is designed to enable small and medium businesses to achieve new levels of productivity. It is built on an all-new vehicle architecture that has a 100mm lower cargo floor and improved cabin access for easier loading and unloading, along with an extensive range of innovative features to help maximise productivity during the working day.

“We are bringing the Territory nameplate back as a new challenger in the rapidly growing sport utility vehicle segment,” Hart says. “The all-new Territory is a spacious five-seater SUV that has a commanding presence and smart technology.” Territory is aimed at young, smart, and connected customers, and embodies a modern design with a commanding presence, a spacious cabin and advanced technology features that deliver an exciting and progressive customer experience.

“Next year will be very exciting for all petrolheads as we bring the all-new Mustang and the thrilling new Mustang Dark Horse to South Africa,” Hart says. The seventh-generation Mustang is the most exhilarating and visceral yet, from its edgier yet timeless exterior design to the fighter jet-inspired digital cockpit and advanced range of engines, including the latest generation of Ford’s 5.0-litre Coyote V8.

The Mustang range just gets even better with the all-new Mustang Dark Horse which will be launched next year as well. This exhilarating new model is the most powerful naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 Mustang ever, and the most track-capable thanks to improved aerodynamics, upgraded hardware, new software and special tuning.

“I am delighted to announce that in 2025 we will be taking South Africa into a new electrified era and bringing new customers to our dealerships with the launch of the all-electric Mustang Mach-E,” Hart says. “Mach-E represents a landmark moment for us as it shows our commitment to a cleaner, greener and electric future in South Africa, symbolizing Ford’s vision for a better tomorrow globally.”

As the first production Ford developed from the ground-up to deliver pure-electric, zero-emission driving, the Mustang Mach-E blends performance with capability. It shows the very cutting edge of Ford’s EV capability and vision for the future and is one of the most exciting vehicles Ford has ever produced.

Building a better world

As Ford celebrates its 100-year heritage with employees, dealers and communities, it aspires to give people in South Africa a bridge to the future and a promise of a better world – and this idea continues to inspire its future. Accordingly, Ford has launched three major community initiatives focused on empowering youth in South Africa through education, totalling R85 million.

Ford South Africa and Ford Motor Company Fund are funding the creation of 100 Maths and Science Labs for primary schools in disadvantaged areas around the country. This project is aimed at improving education with an emphasis on the STEM subjects, comprising science, technology, engineering and maths.

Logistics company Maersk is donating 100 shipping containers for the project, which will see the containers refurbished into fully equipped laboratories by the Gift of the Givers Foundation. The team is working with the Department of Basic Education to identify the schools that will receive the maths and science labs.

Sticking with the ‘100’ and education themes, Ford South Africa is funding the establishment of 100 Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centres. The project is being implemented with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, with ECD centres being built to replace existing nursery schools from disadvantaged areas across South Africa that are dilapidated and not compliant with the government’s health and safety regulations. The new facilities will comprise two classrooms, a kitchen, bathrooms and a sick bay to provide a safe and conducive learning environment for the children.

Furthermore, Ford Motor Company Fund will award 100 Scholarships to highly motivated young South Africans from under-resourced and under-represented communities interested in STEM-related careers. The scholarships will focus on the mechatronics, autotronics, millwright and electrical trade fields, as well as mechatronics and transportation technicians. Beneficiaries will have the opportunity to apply for Ford South Africa’s apprenticeship program, as well as those offered by the broader industry.

More Bay businesses embracing alternative energy sources to mitigate impact of loadshedding

6 November 2023 by Guest Leave a Comment

The Chamber’s third quarter survey results indicate that businesses in Nelson Mandela Bay are increasingly embracing alternative energy solutions to mitigate the impact of loadshedding, so as to limit the impact of the country’s electricity crisis on their operations.

“This is a positive step towards ensuring business continuity and reducing disruptions caused by ongoing power shortages. The results also reflect the growing awareness among businesses of the need for energy resilience in the long-term,” says Denise van Huyssteen, Chamber chief executive officer.

Van Huyssteen further adds that the shift towards alternative energy sources can also have broader positive effects, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable energy practices.

Some of the common alternative energy sources that businesses are implementing include inverters, solar power, backup generators, energy storage solutions like batteries, which enable them to generate their own electricity or store excess power when it is available for use during loadshedding periods. This ensures they are able to maintain their production schedules, meet consumer agreements, and ultimately, improve their operational capacity.

The Chamber surveyed 84 companies, 78% of which indicated they were sourcing alternative energy sources, compared to 64% from the second Quarter. There has also been a positive sentiment from 28% of the businesses who indicated that they anticipated no further retrenchments, compared to 39% in the second Quarter.

The report also showed that 43% of those surveyed implemented short time in the third quarter, compared to 48% in the second quarter and 75% in the first Quarter. Due to the implementation of short time, on average, salaries or wages have been reduced by 27% per employee, per business.

A total of 44% said they were putting their investment and expansion plans on hold, compared to 52% in the second quarter, and 91% in the previous quarter, while 30% are going ahead with their investment plans, with 25% indicating they do not have any investment plans.

Survey results further revealed that 411 jobs were lost between Q1 and Q3 due to retrenchments, with 168 reported for Q3, the largest between the periods under review.

A total of 411 jobs were lost since the beginning of this year, with 168 of these reported for the third quarter. The largest proportion of the businesses (81%) reported no retrenchments in Q3, while 19% pursued this course of action. “It is important to note that these results are reflective of the businesses who participated in the survey,” says Van Huyssteen.

However, the monthly estimated losses to the local economy showed a slight improvement of R0.9 billion for Q3, compared to R 1 billion in Q2. This indicates the positive impact the pivot from over reliance on the grid has had to businesses who are using alternative energy sources.

According to Nedbank’s Impact of load-shedding report on small businesses in the Township Economy 2023, an estimated 5% of South Africa’s GDP was wiped out in 2022, and that the country lost R4 billion per day when the country was on Stage 6.

Taking into consideration that in September the country marked its 40th day of stage 6 load-shedding, an estimated R160 billion has been wiped off the GDP as a result, according to JL Erero’s latest report in the Journal of Economics and Political Economy on the impact of loadshedding in South Africa. He has indicated that the country loses R4 billion a day for every day where stage 6 implemented.

In Q3, 73% of the businesses who participated in the Chamber survey continued to report decreased profits in their balance sheets. This was further exacerbated by a myriad of factors such as an inability to meet customer demand, damage to equipment/machinery or stock, inability to meet production targets, loss of customers, inability to meet export volumes, the shutdown of operations/plants, pending retrenchments, retrenchments, and pending company shutdown, respectively.

A notable recommendation from 18% of the businesses, who in this category mostly represented manufacturers, is that a 24 hour schedule should be implemented more widely to help businesses better plan their operations during loadshedding and be operational for a defined period of time. Public-Private-Partnerships between business and the government are also proposed to develop immediate load-shedding mitigation strategies, while working on long-term solutions to the energy crisis.

To date, 40 large manufacturers participate in the 24 hour stage 5+ schedule, while 34 others did not meet the criteria of having a clean electricity feed and the minimum required megawatt output. This schedule was developed part of collaborative efforts between the Municipality’s Electricity Directorate and the Chamber to collaborate in order to mitigate the impact of loadshedding on the local economy and jobs.

“The 24 hour stage 5+ voluntary schedule has played a pivotal role in providing less frequent disruptions and better predictability for those large manufacturers who have met the criteria to participate in this intervention. While a frequent operational shutdown of 24 hours may not be ideal, however, it is an effective intervention to frequent on/off disruptions.”

“It is thus vital that we continue to partner with the Municipality to find ways of enabling more manufacturers to mitigate the risks associated with loadshedding. In particular, it is vital that going forward load curtailment be explored as a broader consolidated solution to enable the participation of more manufacturers in the metro.”

The Chamber has initiated a trailblazing Renewable Energy Cluster which is supported by 40 manufacturers, representing approximately 20% of the metro’s electricity usage.

“We anticipate that the solar generationaspect of this development will come on stream at the end of next year, while wind generation will follow later in 2025. A key area of focus for us is engaging with the various stakeholders to find solutions for this renewable energy, which will be procured by local businesses, to be used as an off-set for loadshedding for the metro as a whole.”

Coega joins Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams’s Eastern Cape Province Small Business Roadshow

6 November 2023 by Guest Leave a Comment

Gqeberha, South Africa, 6 November 2023 – As part of the ongoing nation-wide programme to support small businesses and informal traders, the Minister of Small Business Development, Honourable Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, in collaboration with the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) and the Coega Development Corporation (Coega), was in the Eastern Cape last week Thursday and Friday.

The Minister participated in a walk-about following the Small Enterprise Development Agency’s (SEDA) Annual Stakeholder Forum at Royal St. Andrew’s Hotel, in Port Alfred. The Forum brought members of industry together to share SEDA’s Performance Report and explore collaborative development opportunities. Coega, as a key stakeholder, was represented by its SMME Training Manager, Ms. Ziyanda Kaleni- Mnyande, who highlighted Coega’s essential role in providing access to market opportunities and funding for SMMEs.

“Through its fully-fledged SMME Development Programme, Coega has been instrumental in enabling access to market opportunities and funding for SMMEs. The Programme places emphasis on capacity building and skills development for SMMEs through various training programmes, mentorship initiatives, and workshops. Coega also equips SMMEs with the essential skills and knowledge to thrive in today’s competitive business landscape,” said Kaleni-Mnyande.

Mr. Mbulelo Jolingana, Director of Enterprise Development for DEDEAT, said: “We convened to engage with key stakeholders in a programme that signifies the latest advancements within the enterprise legislation of 1996. As we navigate the landscape of enterprise development in 2024, we urged SEDA to host a forum, serving as a conduit for invaluable feedback on our programmes and a platform to disseminate updates to our diverse stakeholders.”

This, he said, aligns with the National Integrated Small Enterprise Development Strategy (NISED), a blueprint developed by the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD), aimed at fortifying the ecosystems that underpin our enterprises and cooperatives.

“The strategy is underpinned by three pillars, encompassing both financial and non- financial support mechanisms for our enterprises. In addition, it is our collective mission as a nation to maintain a laser focus on the implementation of these initiatives. In this pursuit, we promote the holistic approach of strengthening the Triple Development Model, working in tandem with local municipalities. Together, we seek to unearth opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises and cooperatives, driving sustainable economic growth and development,” said Mr. Jolingana.

Last week, on Thursday, 2 November 2023, the Minister launched the Crudastar Incubator in Makana Local Municipality. The DSBD seeks to create an enabling environment for the growth and development of small enterprises with a bias towards rural and township-based start-ups owned by women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister stated that the success of business incubation hinges on a united effort of all stakeholders in the ecosystem.

“This innovation hub, fostering a diverse group of entrepreneurs across various sectors, relies on the comprehensive support offered by the Incubator. As entrepreneurs graduate and venture into the business world, they will require financial assistance and essential equipment.

“This underscores the significance of having the full support, especially from the government, while also inviting the private sector to join us in this endeavour. Government’s involvement is paramount, enabling us to monitor the impact of our investments and identify opportunities for these individuals. Therefore, coordination and collaboration are key to effective execution and economic growth,” said the Minister.

The Minister presided over the finals of the Eastern Cape Pitch for Funding competition, which is part of a platform for SMMEs to showcase their ideas, innovations, and business cases to the DSBD family and its partners, facilitating their access to both financial and non-financial support. The event closed with SEDA sharing its performance results. Minister Ndabeni-Abrahams was joined by dignitaries, including, Honourable Mlungisi Mvoko, MEC for Finance and Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism in the Eastern Cape; Cllr Deon De Vos, Executive Mayor of the Sarah Baartman Municipality; Cllr Yandiswa Vara, Executive Mayor of Makana Local Municipality; and Cllr Khululwa Ncamiso, Executive Mayor of Ndlambe Local Municipality.

The Minister handed over much-needed business equipment to several small businesses as part of the department’s Informal and Micro Enterprises Development Programme (IMEDP). IMEDP seeks to grow informal and micro enterprises to their full potential. It is also an intervention that helps address challenges relating to sustainable livelihoods, unemployment, and inequality.
On Friday, the Minister delivered a keynote address at RUCC Farmer’s Day at Glengazi Farm, Ndimakude, Port St John’s and wrapped up the programme with a hand over of business equipment at Winnie Madikizela Mandela Municipality.

Coega’s Top Job-Creating Manufacturing Sector Drives Socio-Economic Development and Inclusive Growth

3 November 2023 by Guest Leave a Comment

Africa’s leading Coega Special Economic Zone, clustered for synergy and fit-for-purpose, is home to several local and international investors in the manufacturing space, including light manufacturing as well as subsets of manufacturing, such as agroprocessing.

Gqeberha, South Africa, 3 November 2023 – The Coega Development Corporation (Coega) last week attended the Manufacturing Indaba to gain first- hand insights into the emerging opportunities and existing challenges within the South African manufacturing sector. As a leading catalyst for the championing of socio-economic development and a leading multi-sector investment destination, Coega is committed to ensuring an enabling environment for current and future Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ) investors, says Dr. Ayanda Vilakazi, Coega’s Unit Head of Marketing, Brand and Communications.

Results from the latest Statistics South Africa Coega SEZ Census Survey, indicate that the manufacturing sector is the largest employer in the SEZ, accounting for (3 563 or 60,5%) of jobs in the SEZ for the period 2020 to 2021. The Census also indicated that manufacturing accounted for just over 70 percent of the total income across the SEZ for 2021, making it a priority sector in terms of job creation and socio-economic development.

Ms. Nolusindiso Jonas, Coega Business Development Manager, says that manufacturing is undoubtedly still a major driver of job creation in South Africa. “Manufacturing activities boost the value generated in an economy by creating activity and jobs along value chains, from raw materials to processing, assembly, and packaging. While the world moves towards automation and tech-powered production lines, South African SEZ’s still place high importance on manual and automation processes which enable job creation. Currently, the Coega SEZ is home to several businesses in the manufacturing space, including Cemza, Coega Steels, Corro Master, VSL Laser, and Chemchamp Africa, to name a few. Soon, the Coega SEZ will be home to the multi-billion-rand Stellantis Auto Manufacturing Plant and Hive Hydrogen Green Ammonia Project, both of which will create thousands of jobs in the sector. To attract further investment in the manufacturing sector, we need to know how to unlock growth opportunities and synergies for these businesses,” added Jonas.

According to Jonas, loadshedding was one of the issues cited as a major obstacle to the progress of the sector. The Coega SEZ has implemented exemption from loadshedding up to stage 4, uninterrupted power supply at its Business Process Outsourcing Park, and a 24-hour load curtailment schedule.

Managing Director of Siyenza Events, Liz Hart, responsible for organising the Manufacturing Indaba, explained that the Coega SEZ was a key stakeholder at the event.

“It is important to profile the South African Development Zones to the Manufacturing Indaba audiences and have representatives available to meet with people interested to know more about Coega,” said Hart.

This week, Coega is represented at the AGOA “Made in Africa” Conference to gain further insights about the sector, form partnerships and explore trade opportunities with the manufacturers from the continent and abroad.

The Coega Integrated Annual Report for the 2022/23 financial year reflected a total of 9 378 people employed in the Coega SEZ, from 8 046 in 2021 (StatsSA’s Coega Investor Survey). The latest 2023 Coega SEZ Census Survey, set to commence in November 2023, will indicate the proportion of these jobs attributable to manufacturing.

The Coega SEZ continues to thrive as a preferred investment destination, providing a competent workforce through vocational training programmes, and addressing industrial challenges while recognising the vital role of manufacturing
in promoting prosperity and job creation across value chains. Since inception in 1999, the Coega SEZ has created more than 160,906 direct and indirect employment opportunities, significantly impacting local economic growth and improving the lives of communities, concluded Dr. Vilakazi.

In conclusion, the Coega’s adherence to corporate policies and governance practices serves as a testament to its unwavering commitment to ethical conduct, transparency, and accountability, and its practices are aligned to the King IV Report on corporate governance (and other relevant policies) that sets out the philosophy, principles, practices, and outcomes which serve as the benchmark for corporate governance in South Africa. With a robust framework in place, Coega continues to set the standard for responsible business practices, fostering a culture of integrity and excellence. As a driving force behind South Africa’s economic development, Coega remains steadfast in its mission to create sustainable opportunities and drive long-term prosperity for all stakeholders.

Mid-Term Budget Review 2023

Budget Review Commentary by Mr. Rodger Hill CA(SA), Chief Financial Officer for Coega Development Corporation.

The Coega Development Corporation welcomes the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) for 2023, presented by the Honourable Minister of Finance, Mr. Enoch Godongwana. The eagerly anticipated address was made against a backdrop of lower global and domestic economic growth, and thus presented strategies to mitigate risks while leveraging new opportunities.

A Balanced and Forward-Thinking Budget

Minister Godongwana’s speech demonstrates commitment to striking a balance between addressing immediate fiscal imperatives while still positioning South Africa for long-term economic growth. The proposed policies and initiatives represent a proactive approach to nurturing both the public and private sectors.

Investment in Key Infrastructure

One of the most heartening aspects of the budget review speech is the government’s focus on enhancing the delivery of infrastructure. Coega wholeheartedly endorses this emphasis, as robust infrastructure development is a fundamental catalyst for economic growth, job creation, and the attraction of both domestic and foreign investment.

With this commitment to increasing investment in critical infrastructure projects, we can envision a South Africa that is better connected, more resilient, and primed for sustainable development. Coega welcomes Treasury’s commitment to create new mechanisms to allow for the participation of private sector and multilateral financiers in critical infrastructure projects. These options are already increasingly being used by the organisation to ensure infrastructure delivery of economically enabling infrastructure without encumbering the fiscus. Such projects are critical catalysts for economic upliftment, creating fertile ground for new industries and employment opportunities, and will go a long way in addressing South Africa’s trifecta of unemployment, poverty, and inequality.

Job Creation and Skills Development

We support the government’s determination to address the pressing issue of unemployment through job creation and skills development and employment programmes. At Coega, we firmly believe that sustained investments in skills development are integral to cultivating a highly skilled and adaptable workforce. By aligning our efforts with the government’s commitment to education and skills development, we can elevate the competitiveness of our industries and pave the way for greater economic inclusivity.

Sustainable Economic Growth

In his speech, Minister Godongwana highlighted the imperative of attaining sustainable economic growth for the benefit of all South Africans. This resonates deeply with Coega, as we are committed to fostering an environmentally responsible and inclusive economic landscape.

We commend the government’s focus on green technologies, renewable energy, and prioritising sustainable resource management. This forward-thinking approach positions South Africa favourably on the global stage and aligns us with international markets that value environmental stewardship and sustainable development.

Conclusion

The proposals set forth by the Finance Minister present a clear appreciation of our nation’s needs and outline governments commitment to creating an inclusive, sustainable, and prosperous South Africa.

Coega stands ready to form partnerships and collaborate with all spheres of government and other stakeholders to translate these proposals into tangible outcomes. By leveraging our existing capabilities and infrastructure, we are resolute in our determination to continue contributing towards driving economic growth, fostering job creation, and sustainable development.
Together, we possess a distinct opportunity to construct a more vibrant and resilient South Africa that confers benefit upon all its citizens.
