Business, religious and other civil society groups urged to speak out against ‘Metro Feast’

The DA in Nelson Mandela Bay calls on all forces of opposition to extravagant expenditure, maladministration and electioneering at the expense of the public purse to stand up and oppose tonight’s ‘The State of the Metro Feast’.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro has not hosted such an address in this current term of office due to austerity measures. What has changed? We remain constrained by austerity yet we justify a feast at rate payers’ expense three weeks before the national election.

The DA has welcomed the additional voices of opposition to maladministration in the past but note with extreme concern the silence in respect of the ‘State of the Metro Address and Feast’. We challenge business groups, religious organisations and civil society at large to boycott this lavish banquet.

We call on you to take a principled stand and boycott this extravagant event tonight. You must not allow the wool to be pulled over your eyes by the Executive Mayor. Attending this event, while opposing maladministration and abuse of the public purse, is tantamount to gross hypocrisy and will undermine the credibility of your opposition.

The people of this Metro, particularly the poor are tired of lavish banquets attended by high ranking ANC politicians and tenderpreneurs who gobble up resources which should be used for the upliftment of the poor and service delivery in general.

We look forward your public denouncement of this feast.
