Business congratulates new Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle

On behalf of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, Mandla Madwara, President, and Kevin Hustler, CEO, have congratulated Phumulo Masualle on his appointment as the Premier of the Eastern Cape.

“We look forward to working with him through the duration of his tenure and hope that we can build a solid relationship with him for the private sector, particularly with regards to Nelson Mandela Bay, which contributes approximately 46 % of the GDP of the province. We need a strong leader who understands the private sector, and who would work to build an enabling environment to ensure that business can thrive. In his role as the Premier of the Eastern Cape, we wish to see Phumulo Masualle driving the implementation of a strategy to create an enabling environment in which business can flourish, to ensure job creation, poverty alleviation and the provision of basic services to citizens. Sustainable, effective and collaborative relationships at all levels of government and civil society are the only way forward.”

Phumulo Masualle was born in Mt Fletcher in the Eastern Cape. He grew up in Mt Frere and later in Umtata where he completed his matric at St Johns College in Mthatha.

He worked in the Eastern Cape Provincial Administration at various levels prior to his elevation to being the Member of the Provincial Legislature. He has been a Member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature since 1999 and has held the following positions; MEC for Roads and Public Works and MEC for Finance and Economic Development and also served in various Standing Committees in the Eastern Cape Legislature.

As a member of the Public Accounts Committee, he was also elected to serve as National Chairperson of the Association of Public Account Committees (APAC). Before becoming Premier, MEC Phumulo Masualle was MEC for the Eastern Cape Provincial Planning and Finance and is the current Provincial Chairperson of the African National Congress. He is also the current National Treasurer of the South African Communist Party and a Member of the African National Congress’ National Executive Committee. In the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature he serves as the leader of government business. He held leadership roles both in the South African Communist Party and the African National Congress. Previous leadership positions he held include the following; Chairperson of the Eastern Cape’s South African Communist Party, Provincial Secretary of the South African Communist Party as well as other positions of leadership.

MEC Phumulo Masualle holds a Diploma in Electrical Engineering and a Post? Graduate Diploma in Economic Principles.
