Within the span of two weeks, we have the privilege to hear another young pianist, this time from Bulgaria. The 24-year-old EMANUIL IVANOV will play for the PE Music Society on Tuesday, 13 June 2023, in the NMU south campus auditorium. The concert will start at 19h00.
EMANUIL IVANOV attracted international attention after receiving the First prize at the 2019 Ferruccio Busoni Piano Competition in Italy. This achievement was followed by concert engagements in some of the world’s most prestigious halls around the world.
Emanuil Ivanov was born in 1998 in the town of Pazardzhik, Bulgaria. From an early age he demonstrated a keen interest and love for music. He regards the presence of symphonic music, especially that of Gustav Mahler, as tremendously influential in his musical upbringing during his childhood. He started piano lessons with Galina Daskalova in his hometown around the age of seven. He later studied in and graduated from the Bertolt Brecht Language High school in Pazardzhik. Ivanov studied with renowned bulgarian pianist, Atanas Kurtev, from 2013 to 2018. He is currently studying on a full scholarship at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire under the tutelage of Pascal Nemirovski and Anthony Hewitt.
Ivanov has won prizes in competitions, such as, Alessandro Casagrande International Piano Competition, “Scriabin-Rachmaninoff”, “Pavel Serebryakov”, “Liszt-Bartok”, “Young virtuosos” and “Jeunesses International Music Competition Dinu Lipatti”.
In February 2021, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Ivanov performed a solo recital in Milan’s famous Teatro alla Scala, related to his award in Feruccio Buzonni Competition. The concert was live-streamed online, without audience and is a major highlight in the artist’s career
During the 2021/2022 concert season, Ivanov is scheduled to perform in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls, including Herkulessaal in Munich and the Great Hall of the Saint Petersburg philharmonic.
2023 is the 150- year anniversary of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s birth. For this reason, Emanuil chose to play in Gqeberha – as part of his programme – the whole of Rachmaninoff’s Etudes Tableaux Op 39. You will also hear 7 Scarlatti Sonatas, Chopin’s famous Sonata no 2, as well as a Theme and Variations composed by Ivanov himself.
Tickets are available at the door. For non-members admission is R95 for adults, R80 for pensioners, R50 for students, and R40 for learners. For further enquiries, please contact Theresa Cunliffe on 041 5042250 (office hours) or theresa.cunliffe@mandela.ac.za or Erika Bothma on 0823084494.
