Shortly before 9:00 am on Tuesday morning 15 February a Nigerian national broke into a house in Scanlen Street, Mount Croix. No one was at home and the alarm was not set as the domestic and gardener had not yet arrived for work when the owners left for work and kids for school.
The gardener noticed that one bedroom window was broken and intercepted the Nigerian suspect climbing out the window with his employers goods (Computer and jewellery, etc). A huge fight erupted between the two as the gardener tried to arrest this tall, well built suspect and received a serious stab wound to the head.
The Nigerian suspect was also seriously injured and tried to make his escape up Bradshaw Street towards the Provincial Hospital. The maid arrived on scene and raised the alarm and neighbours gave chase. SCF member Gordon Smart was alerted by a neighbour and radioed the Police for help.
The Mount Road SAPS and Flying Squad were on scene within minutes and the suspect was arrested within the Provincial Hospital Oncology Department.
The scene of the break in resembled a battlefield.
GOrdon Smart says; “It is important to keep a lookout and also to use your alarm systems even if your property is only going to be unattended for a short while! Be alert – as it appears that we are having an increase in criminal activity from foreigners in the Mount Croix area.”
Ina demonstration of community all the women who work in the homes in Bradshaw and Scanlen street were out in force after the incident, alerting all and assisting to bring about the apprehension of the culprit.
The Mount Croix SCF is contributing towards a recognition award to the gardener- contact Jax on 083 740 9734 if you would like to assist or get involved with the Mount Croix SCF.
