Born Free – Walmer Side of Love – Masifunde Learner Development

The current play is called “Walmer side of love”. Developed by the group and written by George van Rooyen, the storyline spins around the handling of relationships by the youth in a township. It showcases the typical challenges which teenagers are facing like peer pressure and issues around sexual experiences.
However, instead of transferring detailed facts on the connected problems (infidelity, po-lygamy, HIV/Aids), the story follows the characters life journey and shows the negative and positive consequences of their behaviour regarding their relationships. In this way, it exposes the importance of maintaining positive values and practising responsible sexual behaviour. This kind of exposition forces the audience to start to question their own per-spective on relationships.
The play is an innovative way of raising awareness on the prevalent topics amongst the youth in South Africa in order to direct them onto a path towards a healthy lifestyle and it contributes to the fight against the spreading of HIV/Aids.
Through this play, the group aims to reach as many teenagers as possible living in Gqeberha, who come from the same township background.
