Border Dominates local triathlon series

22 December 2014 By Alan Straton

Both defending champions of the About IT Triathlon Summer Series, Round 2, had to settle for the silver medal as new victors snatched the gold medals in a hard fought sprint distance triathlon in Port Elizabeth on Sunday morning.

Men’s defending champion and overall 2013 Series champion, Nathan Le Roux of East London, fought hard throughout but just couldn’t catch Border team mate Clinton Gravett who was in outstanding form to claim round 2 in a fast time of 1 hour 8min with Le Roux over 2 minutes behind and Jeffreys Bay triathlete Paul Du Plessis in 3rd place. Gravett, the SA triathlon championships silver medalist, was placed 2nd in round 1 and pulled out all the stops to take the lead in the cycle section of the event and extended this lead during the run leg. In the ladies race, undefeated Series champion since 2010, Liza Kingston, came out the water 4th and pushed hard throughout but couldn’t catch Corinne Berg of Johannesburg who led from start to finish to complete the race in 1 hour 16min and become the first lady to beat Kingston in an About IT Triathlon Series event. 28 year old Berg, who finished 2nd in her age group at this year’s 70.3 Ironman, was visiting Port Elizabeth to train for next year’s Ironman event which she will be taking part in for the first time.

In the overall standings, Le Roux leads the Junior category with Port Elizabeth’s Keegan Cooke and Munro Ferreira tied for second place whilst Gravett leads the Senior standings from Gauteng triathlete Cobus Kruger and PE’s Gawie Henning whilst in the ladies category, Germany’s Katharina Lieb leads the junior category from PE’s Shannon Bradford with defending champion Liza Kingston leading the senior category whilst Grahamstown’s Alexia Loizou and UK based athlete Jade Hooke tie for 2nd place.

The final round of the About IT Triathlon Summer Series takes place on Friday morning at Port St Francis, starting at 8.30am. Race registration, results and further information on the Series is available on www.trisummerseries.co.za.
