Bloody Battle in Council

27 October 2016 By Alan Straton

Late this afternoon at the Nelson Mandela Bay Council meeting at the Wool Exchange Council Chambers, Military Road, a battle ensued between coalition parties and the official opposition, the ANC.

In the confusion it was reported that shots were fired and early reports were made that someone had been shot only to be refuted later by Mayoral Chief of Staff, Kristoff Adelbert.

The fight in council occurred from a contested item when two ANC Councillors, who had been ordered to leave council – Councillors Makhi Feni and Andile Lunga, approached the Speaker of the Council, Jonathan Lawack, in an intimidating manner.

In the ensuing fracas glass jugs and glasses were shattered and Mayoral Committee Member for Roads and Transport, Rano Kayser injured with what appears to be a head injury.

It is believed that a shot/s were fired by a member of security after being called in. Military Road was cordoned off by Police, media denied entry to Council Chambers and SAPS members were seen chasing what is presumed was a suspect down Govan Mbeki and into Woolworths.

Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip said that Chief Whip, Werner Senekal had been stabbed in the back with a sharp object.

At a press conference the coalition parties; DA, ACDP, AIC, EFF, UDM and PA all condemned the ANC for their “horrific criminal acts in NMB council today.”
