This extract is from a speech delivered today by DA Mayoral Candidate, Athol Trollip, while on the campaign trail in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage and Despatch:

Today, I have once again seen the crumbling infrastructure and rapidly deteriorating service delivery in Uitenhage, KwaNobuhle and Despatch.
The DA can win Nelson Mandela Bay at this year’s local government election, because the time of broken ANC promises is over. We will immediately begin working to ensure that all parts of the Metro receive equal service delivery through sound financial management, by adopting innovative solutions to challenges faced, and reprioritising resources to where they are needed most
Residents from KwaNobuhle spoke of their desperation at sporadic refuse collection, overflowing drains and dirty water. The elderly and vulnerable living at Cuyler Court Old Age Home expressed deep concern at regular water cuts which often pose huge health risks.
On 18th November 2015, Deputy Mayor Ndoni came out in support of a sub-council for Uitenhage and Despatch saying it “would bring services closer” to these neglected towns. While on the 17th May 2016, Mayor Jordaan claimed that a sub-council “was not the answer for the problems” facing the area and would be a “backwards step”.
While this administration fights amongst themselves over pressing matters, service delivery is grinding to a halt in some of NMB’s forgotten outlying communities. It is clear that this government has no plan and no solutions to service delivery concerns.
Only the DA has a tried and tested blueprint for change that sees better services delivered where we govern, which is exactly why we can win Nelson Mandela Bay this year. The DA-led Western Cape has the highest access to water, sanitation and electricity because we have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of residents.
Service delivery gives our people dignified spaces in which to live. Fixing potholes, weekly refuse collection in every ward, maintaining all municipal roads, providing access to electricity, potable water and sanitation will be priorities for the DA in government here in Nelson Mandela Bay.
Speeding up redress will be prioritised through the upgrade of informal settlements and the provision of serviced sites so that all residents can access basic services. A DA government in NMB will also focus on cutting red tape to speed up the re-zoning and transfer of title deeds to housing beneficiaries and giving people legal ownership of their homes. This would not only give recipients an asset to leverage but also a home to call their own.
On the 3rd August 2016 the people of the Bay will have an opportunity to bring change to our Metro. Change that delivers better services, stops corruption and creates jobs. The DA is ready to govern.
