Bay Stars’ Trounce Mthatha Liverpool

Nelson Mandela Bay’s future Premier Soccer League hope, Bay Stars, overpowered Nedbank Cup contenders Mthatha Liverpool 1 – 0 on Saturday, 12 November 2011 and now call on their fans to support them on Friday night at the Gelvandale Stadium at 19:00.

Yesterday’s victory – made possible by a goal from Leroy van Rensburg and rock-solid defending – means the team now has four wins and one goalless draw under its belt. This puts the Bay outfit on par with former log leaders FC Buffalo who only managed a draw against Themba Royals.

Bay Stars Managing Director, Tony Lovegrove, said he was inspired with the performance of the team this weekend but warned that the next encounter against FC Tornado, last year’s runners-up in the Vodacom League, might not be smooth sailing.

“It will be a tough encounter and we need to show the players that Nelson Mandela Bay is behind them by getting more supporters in the stands.

“To attain this, we are working on transport arrangements to bus in supporters from the townships in order to bring our fans to the match and to take them home again. On top of this, entry to the Gelvandale Stadium is free.”

The team is currently playing all its home games at the Gelvandale Stadium while work on the Wolfson Stadium is still under way.

Bay Stars Coach Graham Harrison agrees that FC Tornado will be a tough encounter.

“They ended up very high on the Vodacom League log last season and we are definitely not considering this to be a fluke on their part,” Harrison said.

John Giannakis missed out on the Mthatha Liverpool match due to a toe injury but should be fit and ready for this weekend’s game.

Coach Harrison added that the confidence in the camp is high and the team is determined to collect maximum points at home.
