Nelson Mandela Bay’s Premier Soccer League hope, Bay Stars, take on Cloud 9 tomorrow night at the Gelvandale Stadium in their last league encounter before the Christmas break.
Even though Bay Stars had to return to Nelson Mandela Bay without kicking a ball against Mighty Greens in Lady Grey on Saturday due to heavy rain and thunder, the squad is still confident as they have not suffered any losses as yet. If their good fortune continues, they will be giving Bay soccer fans an early Christmas gift of being undefeated so far this season.
The match starts at 6:00pm at the Gelvandale Stadium on Wednesday 14 December. Entry is free and fans are welcome to pack their picnic baskets and enjoy the atmosphere with their families next to the pitch.
Coach Graham Harrison said he is happy that the team has prepared well and expressed confidence that Bay Stars can collect 3 points against the visitors.
Meanwhile the South African Football Association’s u-17 tournament kicked off at the Gelvandale Stadium this week with talent scouts from across the length and breadth of the country descending on Nelson Mandela Bay to seek young talent for their squads.
Bay Stars’ Managing Director Tony Lovegrove said: “This national tournament in our backyard creates a good opportunity for us as we are days away from trials at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s South Campus”.
The trials start on Monday, 19 December, at 9:00 am and ends on Wednesday, 21 December. Players must bring an ID and although a player’s profile will be helpful it is not a prerequisite.
“We also placed our scouts at the national u-17 matches with the aim of inviting some of those players to our trials.
“We are still very much in line with our goal of identifying the cream of the crop in Nelson Mandela Bay and providing them with a conducive environment to express themselves and build football in this region to the level that our city can once again be a force on a national level,” Lovegrove added.
