The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber has come out in support of the proposal presented by the Economic Development Directorate to councillors at the economic development, tourism and agriculture committee, as it is aligned with the Business Chamber’s Vision 2030 and the NMB Industrial Development Strategy.
“Tourism has been identified as a sector with the potential to promote economic growth and development in Nelson Mandela Bay, in line with moves to diversify the Bay’s economy. The proposed catalytic projects are a step in the right direction and we welcome the proposal,” said NMBBC CEO, Kevin Hustler
Tourism in general – whether sports, business, travel or domestic – is vital to our economy.
We have seen the recent increase in the number of internationally recognised events hosted in the Nelson Mandela Bay during this week alone. Events such as the Rodriguez Live in South Africa Concert, Roxette 30th Anniversary Live Tour and South Africa vs England One Day International have in turn resulted in a boost to the Nelson Mandela Bay economy. Their success sets us up to become an international event destination of choice.
Events such as these generate interest in our city and deserve the support of the people of this city for the exposure they provide and the potential revenue they generate.
Hustler concluded by saying; “We would like to wish South Africa all the best for the next phase of the ODI taking place tomorrow at the St Georges Cricket Stadium.”
The return of Super Rugby will also raise the profile of the city whilst the local Algoa Bay Yacht Club continues to attract sailors to the city with five major events scheduled for this year: ABYC Interclub on North End Lake – 16 and 17 April 2016; Vasco Da Gamma Ocean Race from Durban to Port Elizabeth – 23 to 27 April 2016; ABYC Week in Algoa Bay – 29 April to 2 May 2016; IRC Nationals in Algoa Bay – 30 April to 2 May 2016 and the Laser National Championships in Algoa Bay – 1 to 5 October 2016.
Add the Ironman and Ocean Racing Series events and Port Elizabeth is continuing to prove that we are the watersport capital of South Africa, if not Africa.
