South African Football Association (SAFA) President Dr Danny Jordaan has refuted reports that South Africa’s historic 1-0 win over current European and World champions, Spain mid-week will be downgraded to a practice match. This follows Spain’s seventh substitutions during the match which pundits insist was against Fifa’s rules on international friendly matches. In a scathing response, Jordan says the reports are baseless and unfounded, adding that it is just a figment of imagination from faceless journalists. Jordaan explains……
However on the controversial issue of Spain’s fielding a seventh substitution, this is what Jordaan had to say.
He further emphasized that as SAFA, they consider the match between South Africa and Spain a category A clash. And in as far as they are concerned the result would stand official.
Asked to clarify as to why a referee from Lesotho was assigned to officiate such a big match, Jordaan insists that officials competency should be based on their capabilities and not where they come from. According to Jordaan, European referees make more mistakes than their African counterparts.
The motive of those peddling the down-grading of the match has been questioned. Jordan says faceless people trying to undermine and rubbish Bafana Bafana’s deserved win over Spain must be exposed.
According to SAFA, all the match reports will be submitted to FIFA so that, the world’s football controlling body can pronounce.
South Africans are still proud of Bafana Bafana’s performance against Spain. In fact skeptics predicted a Spanish drubbing of South Africa. However coach Gordon Igesund and his charges did not disappoint. Journalist: Coudjoe Amankwaa
