Are the people of the Transkei more switched on than us?

During a recent trip through the Transkei down to Hole in the Wall I was astounded at the number of homes – traditional and modern – and schools with Solar Panel installations.

Admittedly most of the homes had a single panel for a light and charge controller to charge a battery but even so the impression was that the people of Transkei had arrived in terms of renewable energy.
