Andile Ace Magxaki as Curley McLain

14 May 2011 By Alan Straton

Oklahoma! is being staged at the Savoy Theatre from 18 May to 4 June 2011 (run extended due to demand) and one of the leads is Andile “Ace” Magxaki as Curley McLain.

Ace has been a regular on the G&S stage for many shows including Cabaret, Footloose, Guys & Dolls and featured in our Valentine’s Cabaret for 2011, Crazy In Love. He also appeared as the loveable Schroeder in You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown for PEMADS. Oklahoma has been an exciting journey for him in his first lead role. Ace says that he loves playing Curley “because , as it often is with acting, he is an extension of myself. I think there is a little bit of Curley in everyone and it’s one of those things we draw from when playing a role. It’s a joyride and one I’m certain the audience will enjoy.”

Oklahoma!, presented by the Port Elizabeth Gilbert & Sullivan Society, tells the story of a handsome cowboy winning the heart of a headstrong farm girl in Oklahoma territory at the turn of the 20th Century and has entranced theatregoers for generations. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s award-winning score features the title song “Oklahoma!” and also includes “I’m Just a Girl Who Cain’t Say No,” “The Farmer and the Cowman”, “People Will Say We’re In Love,” and “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning.” This much loved musical premiered in 1943 and was a box office smash, running for an unprecedented 2,212 performances. There have been many revivals over the years including the acclaimed 1998 London production starring Hugh Jackman and the show has been a huge hit with audiences time after time.

The show is set for a limited run from 18 May to 4 June 2011 (run extended due to demand) at The Savoy Theatre in Port Elizabeth with tickets available for R110 at all Computicket outlets. A special discount has been created for students and pensioners who can get tickets at the door on the night of the show for a largely discounted rate of R80. Student/pensioner cards must be produced to qualify for this discount and regretfully only door bookings can be made.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
