AI Is Fast. Advanced Excel Skills Keep Businesses Accurate

9 June 2026 By Alan Straton

Cape Town: Artificial intelligence is transforming the way employees work with data, reports, spreadsheets, and business information.

AI tools such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot can generate formulas, analyse data, create reports, and suggest solutions within seconds.

However, as AI adoption increases, many organisations are discovering that speed does not always guarantee accuracy.

  • AI can create formulas.
  • AI cannot guarantee that the formula is correct.
  • AI can analyse data.
  • AI cannot guarantee that the source data is accurate, complete, or suitable for decision-making.

As a result, many businesses are realising that Advanced Excel skills remain just as important in the AI era as they were before the arrival of ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot.

“AI can generate formulas in seconds. The challenge is knowing whether the formula is correct, whether the data is reliable, and whether the result makes business sense. That still requires Advanced Excel skills and human judgement,” says Arnold Muscat, Director of College Africa Group.

Employees are increasingly using AI to build spreadsheets, create dashboards, summarise information, and automate repetitive tasks.

While these tools can save significant amounts of time, they can also introduce errors if outputs are accepted without verification.

Incorrect formulas, poor assumptions, missing data, and misunderstood business requirements can quickly lead to inaccurate reports and poor business decisions.

Advanced Excel users understand how data is structured, how formulas interact, how calculations are performed, and how results should be validated before being presented to management.

This combination of technical Excel knowledge and business judgement is becoming increasingly valuable as AI adoption accelerates.

“The most valuable employees in the AI era will not be those who use AI the most. They will be the employees who can validate AI-generated work and identify problems before they become costly business errors,” adds Muscat.

Rather than replacing spreadsheet skills, AI is changing how those skills are applied.

Professionals who understand Advanced Excel are often better positioned to use AI effectively because they can identify mistakes, challenge assumptions, and verify outputs before they affect business operations.

The conversation is no longer about choosing between AI and Excel. The future belongs to employees who know how to combine both.

Businesses that invest in Advanced Excel skills alongside AI Productivity Training are likely to achieve better outcomes, more reliable reporting, and greater confidence in decision-making.

Organisations looking to improve reporting accuracy, data analysis capabilities, spreadsheet skills, and AI readiness should continue investing in Advanced Excel Training alongside AI Productivity Training.
