“AI in the Workplace Is Growing Fast – But Most South African Teams Are Using It Without Training”

14 April 2026 By Alan Straton

Table of Contents

Durban: Artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot are being adopted rapidly across South African organisations. However, a concerning trend is emerging: employees are using these tools without formal training or clear guidelines.

“Many teams are already using AI — but very few are using it correctly,” says Arnold Muscat, Director of College Africa Group (CAG).

“This creates a false sense of confidence, where outputs are trusted without proper validation.”

The Risk of Unstructured AI Use

In many workplaces, AI is being used for:

  • Drafting emails and reports
  • Creating policies and documents
  • Supporting HR and finance functions

While these use cases offer clear productivity benefits, they also introduce risk when not properly managed.

“AI tools generate responses that sound correct — but they are not always accurate,” explains Arnold Muscat.

Without proper training, organisations face:

  • Incorrect or misleading information
  • Poor decision-making
  • Reputational and compliance risks

Why Training Is Now Essential

AI is not just another software tool — it changes how work is done.

Employees need to understand:

  • How AI generates responses
  • When outputs can be trusted
  • How to verify and validate information
  • Where AI should and should not be used

“Understanding the limitations of AI is just as important as understanding its capabilities,” says Arnold Muscat.

A Growing Responsibility for Business Leaders

For HR, L&D, and management teams, the challenge is no longer whether to adopt AI — but how to manage it responsibly.

This includes:

  • Establishing clear AI usage guidelines
  • Training staff on risks and best practices
  • Ensuring accountability for outputs
  • Aligning AI use with company policies

“Without governance, AI becomes a risk rather than a productivity tool,” adds Arnold Muscat.

Building a Responsible AI Culture

Forward-thinking organisations are taking a structured approach to AI adoption by:

  • Providing foundational AI training
  • Introducing practical workplace use cases
  • Emphasising verification and human oversight
  • Integrating AI into existing workflows responsibly

This ensures that AI enhances productivity without compromising accuracy or control.

Supporting South African Businesses

College Africa Group (CAG) provides corporate training programmes designed to help teams adopt AI safely and effectively, including:

  • AI in the Workplace (governance, risks, and responsible use)
  • ChatGPT for Business (practical applications for productivity)
  • Microsoft Copilot Awareness Training (understanding use within Microsoft environments)

“Our focus is to help organisations move from experimentation to structured, responsible use of AI,” says Arnold Muscat.

Conclusion

AI adoption is accelerating — but without proper training, it introduces risk.

For South African businesses, success will depend not on how quickly AI is adopted, but on how effectively it is used.
