Advice to new administrations

Acting Director-General at the GCIS, Donald Liphoko, has challenged the incoming administrations and ward councillors that will be working with communities after these municipal elections to go the extra mile to serve the people.

“We encourage everybody to put their shoulders to the wheel and work towards making South Africa a better place for all,” said Liphoko on Thursday.

Results are still streaming in from the 2016 Local Government Elections. Liphoko added a congratulatory word to the incoming leaders. The final results announcement is expected on Saturday.

Speaking to SAnews from the National Results Operations Centre (ROC) in the country’s capital, Liphoko once again thanked voters for turning out in their numbers to cast their votes, despite yesterday’s unfavourable weather conditions.

He was particularly pleased with all stakeholders involved in organising the elections.

“Government wants to acknowledge all the hard work that has been put together by countless volunteers in supporting the IEC to ensure that South Africans have the opportunity to cast their ballots in these municipal elections.”

He commended the conduct of all – from the electorate to political role players, saying the mood has been generally positive.

“All the political parties have cooperated, not only with one another but with the IEC. They stuck to the Electoral Code of Conduct and made it possible for South Africans to participate in these elections without any form of intimidation. I would like to believe that the same spirit of collaboration will continue when this new administration takes shape,” said Liphoko. – SAnews.gov.za
