The Port of Port Elizabeth formed part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Urban Run route today. This charity fundraising event involves tackling urban obstacles along the designated route through the city.
“The port won the Best Obstacle Course trophy in two consecutive years – in 2016 and 2017 – it is therefore with great expectation that we are once again afforded the opportunity to be part of this prestigious race,” said Rajesh Dana, Port Manager of the Port of PE.
Approximately 500 runners entered the port through the Flemming Street Entrance between 09:00 and 11:00 today, tackling seven strategically placed obstacles. This route allowed them an overview of the picturesque port with its unique operations before exiting through the Baakens Street Entrance. Whilst port users were encouraged to use alternative port routes during this period, port operations were not negatively affected.
“This event is aligned with Transnet’s strategy of transforming the Port of Port Elizabeth to be a ‘people centric port.’ It is further linked to the Port of PE’s future plans of a waterfront development, which is founded firmly on a SMART people’s port foundation, affording the port an opportunity to host public events while creating a platform to display the rich art, culture and heritage of the Eastern Cape,” said Dana.
Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) supports philanthropic initiatives, such as the Urban Run, which are aimed at benefiting the Nelson Mandela Bay community.
