A Life Changing Initiative

Thousands of people in the Eastern Cape are benefiting from a project partnership between the provincial Department of Human Settlements and the Coega Development Corporation (CDC)

The CDC recently handed over the keys of 54 houses to 54 beneficiaries in Macleantown, outside East London, in the Eastern Cape. The handover took place after the CDC was appointed by the Department of Human Settlements to assist with rolling out the construction of RDP houses for various communities within the Eastern Cape.

The Macleantown project, with an investment value of R 6 million, already has beneficiaries utilising the houses, all of which have running water, sanitation and electricity.

The implementation of the project saw 27 emerging contractors within the Buffalo City Municipality trained by the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) as part of the CDC’s SMME development and support programme.

In line with the CDC’s vision of being the leading catalysts for championing of the socio-economic development, the organisation mentored the emerging contractors who worked on the project to ensure high quality construction. The focus areas for the mentorship included Material Management, Labour Management, as well as Construction Management, to name but a few focal areas.

“As an implementing agent of choice in South Africa and Eastern Cape in particular, it has been a pleasure to work with the provincial government in providing quality, life-changing, and life-saving services to the community through new infrastructure and construction,” says Bekani Madyibi, CDC’s Programme Manager, Technical Procurement Support Unit.

Nolwandle Goloda (64) and her husband Thandelakhe Goloda (82), featured here, are some of the happy residents whose lives have been changed for the better by the Macleantown project. The family has been living in a shack for some time, but now, thanks to the CDC, have a house of their own.

“This house is a dream come true for us, as we have never been able to, but always wanted to, own our own house. Our lives have been transformed by this project,” says Nolwandle Goloda, wiping off the tears of joy.

The project forms part of various construction projects that the CDC has implemented by utilising its expertise in developing life changing initiatives through minor and mega infrastructure projects, including facilities management.

“All the projects implemented by the CDC aim to give hope to many communities in the impoverished areas of the Eastern Cape, in line with the organisation’s mandate and vision. Our role as an Enterprise is to continue championing the socio-economic development in the province, thus improve the quality of life for many of our communities,” says Dr Ayanda Vilakazi, CDC Unit Head Marketing and Communications.

Since the inception of the CDC in 1999, the organisation has played a pivotal role in the empowerment andthe transformation of communities in the Eastern Cape and greater South Africa. The CDC recently won the highly coveted and prestigious Legends of Empowerment & Transformation award at the 2016 Oliver Empowerment Awards, which was held in Johannesburg.
