A Dubious 10 000 for Hashim Amla

One would like to think that Hashim Amla would NOT want to be remembered for being the 10 000’th cricketer to be dismissed Leg Before Wicket (LBW) in a Test Series but it is what it is. Amla’s 28th LBW dismissal out of 153 dismissals in 98 test matches now also represents the 10 000’th LBW dismissal in Test History

This mark was reached during the Boxing Day Test match at St. George’s Park in Port Elizabeth between South Africa and Sri Lanka when Amla was dismissed by left-arm pacer Nuwan Pradeep just 2 runs shy of a half-century.

Hashim Amla’s name is etched in South African cricket history. With his wristy leg-side flick and serene cover drive, Amla became the first South African to score a triple century in Test cricket, while also effectively shifting gears to become the fastest batsman to 2 000 (40 innings), 3 000 (57 innings), 4 000 (81 innings) and 5 000 (101 innings) runs in ODI cricket.

Amla has scored 7636 runs over 166 Test Match innings with a highest score of 311 and an average of 49.90 runs.

Topping the list for the cricketer with the most LBW dismissals in Test Cricket is Sachin Tendulkar on 63. He is accompanied in the Top 10 by SA’s Graeme Smith on 44.

Another South African with a LBW record of note is JP Duminy who has the highest percentage of LBW dismisals to date – with 19 out of 53 to date – on a high of 35.85%.

Against a 17.05% of LBW dismissals since the start of 2000, the countries with the lowest LBW percentage of dismissals are Australia, the lowest among all countries on 11.43% and the next lowest is 12.81%, in South Africa – which is indicative of the bouncy pitches in both countries.
