A Double Take on Life

A Blend of traditional and modern art and “music for the mind” is the chosen theme for an acoustic art exhibition titled “Duo Back to Back” to open to the public on Thursday May 21 at the Athenaeum in Belmont Terrace in Central, Port Elizabeth.

It will feature a range of paintings by self-taught Nelson Mandela Bay artist, poet and musician Phumla Citeko and internationally known Muso Masoabi, who was born in Lesotho where his family were in exile but has now returned to the Eastern Cape where he is now based.

Both Artists already have their works on show in Port Elizabeth, with Masoabi’s works also in private collections in Britain and Los Angeles, as well as in various parts of South Africa.

“I have drawn on my life experiences as an African woman and mother for my art, which reflects passion and love for Xhosa tradition and culture.” Citeko says.

“I am a self-confessed idealist because of my past experience and my work is driven through recollections of past events and by my vision of a peaceful and just future.”

Two of her paintings – The Key and Memories – were shown in the ‘Wish You Were Here’ exhibition in Port Elizabeth in 2014 and a further work, The Caul, an abstract, is on show at the 2015 Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum’s “Who’s Who and What’s New”2015 exhibition and competition.

Maosabi has used various media for his works, but now concentrates on bold, colourful paintings mainly using a pallet knife which is recognised as being the hallmark of his current energetic style.

His work can also be seen at the “Who’s Who and What’s New” exhibition in the Bay.

The “Duo Back to Back” exhibition is being opened and artists’ introductions carried out by renowned New Brighton artist Dola Sapeta and his collaborator and fellow artist Louwrens Westraad.

The private opening is at the Athenaeum on Wednesday May 20 and it will be open to the public the following day and run until Wednesday June 10.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
