A Beach Fit For a Dolphin

6 June 2023 By Alan Straton

Woodlands Dairy again proved its commitment to the environment by getting to work on the beaches of Dolphin Beach in Jeffreys Bay on World Oceans Day last Friday (June 2, 2023).

Says Mandla Charlie, Assistant Brand Manager at Woodlands Dairy and First Choice: “Raising awareness of the impact of litter on the environment and society can influence people’s behaviour. When individuals understand the consequences of littering, they’re more likely to adopt responsible behaviours such as proper waste disposal and recycling. While cleaning the beach we picked up plastics bags, bottles, and plastic straws. Plastic really is not fantastic, and it’s a reality we all need to face together. Our aim is to ultimately encourage individuals to reduce their plastic consumption and properly dispose of all litter they find on the beach.”

He continuous that Woodlands Dairy is committed to promoting the adoption of sustainable practices and advocate for responsible waste management systems. “We want our community to join our campaign and spread the word. We continuously engage with participants in sharing their experience and promoting the importance of beach clean-ups. We utilise all our online platforms, such as websites, blogs, and social media, to share educational content on litter-related issues and highlight the environmental impact of single-use items and the benefits of reusable alternatives.”

As part of their commitment to recycling and reducing its impact on the environment, Woodlands Dairy installed reverse vending machines (RVMs) at their dairy shops. “We have RVMs in Jeffreys Bay, St Francis bay as well as Gauteng. Together, we can protect our oceans, raise awareness about litter and plastic pollution, and create a cleaner and healthier coastal ecosystem for future generations. Consumers can return empty containers such as milk cartons for recycling and receive a small reward which can be accrued in an in-app e-wallet,” Charlie concludes.
