52 Over the Weekend for Paws ‘n Claws

What a perfect weekend, weather-wise, it was for our Paws ‘n Claws Motherwell Spayathon! It was heads down and snip-snap from early on Saturday to late on Sunday and 52 animals went home, never having to endure the over-breeding again. The fantastic public response and one donation of R10 000 from a couple who would prefer to remain anonymous, but who firmly believe in sterilisation programmes, has made it possible for us to go beyond this total and last week Dr. Kobus came in to sterilise 24 animals for us and he will be doing another 24 over the next two Saturdays, bringing the Paws n Claws sterilisations up to 100! Our huge thanks and debt to Bev and Patrick Scott, in the centre of our block pics, who walked the 260km Saxon Shore Way in the UK, to raise these funds. Last year they walked 240km along the Shakespeare Way and also funded a spayathon at that stage. What a pleasure to have this unassuming couple on board, who are dedicated to the cause.

All in all, the Motherwell dogs were a little under-nourished, there were a few skin problems and one poor little one had a bad chain injury, which will be addressed, but all were strong fighters, handled the anaesthetic and gave our dedicated snip-snap team a few laughs when they were on their feet and “wanting out of there”. Thanks to everyone who responded, each one went home with a blanket and pellets. Those who needed extra nourishment were also treated to some Husky Chunky!

The Centre was abuzz with activity as other animal groups came to collect their share of our unbelievable donation of 4 tons of frozen chicken backs. To our generous anonymous sponsor in this regard, our heartfelt thanks. You reached so many animals – as far afield as Colchester, Kirkwood and Steytlerville.

Our wonderful spayathon field teams of Justice, Raymond, Jerome, Patsy and Bev were able to distribute on their way to collect animals for the spayathon and a feast was had by many starving animals, right there on the streets.

To our ace Snip-Snap team – Dr. Pikkie, Babs, Gwen, Clayton, Ros, Louisa, Janet, Nicky, Sandra, Josh and Glen – once again, my most grateful thanks for always being there to make a difference and to those extra volunteers on this one – Des, Keaton, Tevin, Sune and Christell – your help was invaluable.

And that’s a wrap for the Paws ‘n Claws Motherwell Spayathon, for now, with Thornhill once again knocking at the door and Vastrap starting to yell! Onward and upward in trying to make a difference to those who cannot speak for themselves, with the solid help of a fantastic team and a network of amazing animal-lovers.
