The launch of the Aquabear Invitational Meet 2016 was held on Wednesday, 7 September at the Grey High School Pool in Port Elizabeth. Media and Sponsors had the opportunity to see some of Aquabear’s young, upcoming and dedicated swimmers in action at the training pool – very tiring to watch!

The  Aquabear  Swim Club (as it is known now) has a rich history with the club established out of the old P.A. Park and F.M.C. Swimming clubs which actually date back to 1918. From these clubs, Aquabear emerged in 1971 under the auspices of current active swim coach Brian Elliot.

The current crop of swimmers continue to elevate the Club philosophy of ‘be the best YOU can be’, evidenced by Christopher Reid having just returned to America to continue his studies and training, after making it through to the semi-finals at the Rio Olympics. The club is also extremely proud of multiple Olympian Kevin Paul who has won another Gold Medal in the Paralympics in Rio – adding to his already impressive medal tally.

This year the  Aquabear Invitational Meet will be held from 30 September to 3 October 2016 at the Newton Park Pool, Port Elizabeth to mark its 44th year of competition. Not only does it boast to be one of the best and biggest club gala’s in the country, but it also caters for disabled and master swimmers. The gala is unique as it is the only club gala that offers the format of Heats in the morning and Finals in the evening for senior swimmers.

The past 44 years have shown that anything is possible through hard work and dedication. In addition, support over the years has remained  loyal and the Aquabear Swim Club sincerely thanks their generous sponsors, notably Spar Eastern Cape, First Choice Milk, TYR Swimwear and  Denys Edwardes for their ongoing support, without which events like these would not be possible.
