Conservation staff at Addo Elephant National Park have discovered the carcasses of 21 jackals and one crow in the main game viewing area of the park, following reports from tourists early this morning.
It is not yet known what caused the deaths of the animals. A South African National Parks (SANParks) vet is currently in the park investigating.
AENP is the third largest national park and is home to the Big Five, including over 600 elephant. Jackals play an important role in the park in terms of restoring the natural ecological processes through predation as a key means of conserving biodiversity.
Addo spokesperson Fayroush Ludick said that; “Further details will be released as soon as we have more information.”
