A great turnout is expected for Sunday’s City Lodge Hotels 3 Beaches Challenge which starts and finishes on Kings Beach from 9am. The hotel chain, which has no fewer than 4 hotels in Port Elizabeth with their Courtyard Hotel, City Lodge Hotel, Town Lodge and the Road Lodge, is one of the most active supporters of local sports events within Port Elizabeth’s hospitality industry.

“This year we have moved the start/finish area of the event to Kings Beach to highlight recent rejuvenation of this area.” said event organiser Mike Zoetmulder of local non-profit events company Zsports. “We feel it’s important to support the Metro in trying to draw the public back to Kings Beach and to take advantage of the awesome changes which have taken place”.

The City Lodge Hotels 3 Beaches Challenge is a unique event which sees participants racing from beach to beach between Kings Beach and Pollok Beach with various categories of entry available. For the open water swimmers there is the individual, duo (team of 2) and quad (team of 4) team categories with the swimmers racing from Kings Beach to Humewood Beach (1.1km), Humewood Beach to Hobie Beach (800m), Hobie Beach to Pollok Beach (1.6km) and then running back to Kings Beach (3km). Participants are required to come out of the water at each of the beaches to round a transition area and/or hand over to their team mate. For the surf lifesavers, the Surf Lifesaving Ironman Category could prove very popular as the lifesavers race from Kings Beach to Humewood Beach on a Malibu Board, then swim from Humewood to Hobie Beach before getting on a Surf Ski for the longest stretch of the race between Hobie and Pollok Beach before running back to the start.

Entries are now in late entry phase at R150 per person, late entries on the day are discouraged and come with a late entry fee of R200 per person. The first 75 participants that entered will each receive a complimentary t-shirt which they can collect on the morning from the merchandising area.
