The increase in the murder rate in the Eastern Cape as well as the increase in sexual crimes means that the people of the Eastern Cape and women in particular will continue to live in a state of fear.
The increase in sexual offences per 100,000 of the population was the second highest in the country whereas the increase in the murder rate was the fourth highest.
The high increase in burglaries at non-residential premises is a major cause for concern. The increase per 100,000 of the population was the highest in the country. When one compares the 2011/12, 2012/13 statistics one sees the increase to be 16%. This clearly indicates that businesses are being targeted which are the life blood of our economy. The SAPS must pull out all stops to ensure these crimes against businesses are reduced.
Stock theft also remains at a very high level. In the commercial agricultural sector it destroys jobs and in the communal agricultural sector it destroys livelihoods.
The DA believes that crime statistics should be released on a regular basis so that communities are informed, government departments can plan and crime specialists can put forward solutions.
