The Jeffreys Bay crime statistics for the past three months were released at a poorly attended Community Police Forum (CPF) meeting on Monday night.
The local Police are only allowed to release percentage increases or decreases for the various crime categories, which was once again slammed by the members of the public who attended the meeting.
The crime stats released by the Police are totally meaningless and play no role in fighting crime in the town.
Actual figures need to be released to the public in real time so that we can be pro-active and ensure the safety of our community. If there is a spate of house breaking’s taking place in a particular suburb, we need to know about it so the people living there can take precautions.
The fact that house robberies have increased by 200 % over the past three months, when compared to the previous three months, is also misleading as the stats come off a very low base.
Just how low the base is cannot be reported due to the moratorium placed on the releasing of actual crime figures by the South African Police on a national level.
Theft out of motor vehicles is also on the increase in Jeffreys Bay, a crime that does occur more frequently over the holiday season.
Whilst stealing of motor vehicles has decreased over a three month period, there has been an upturn over the past month. Again, residents are not allowed to know just how many motor vehicles have been stolen.
The DA is committed to fighting the scourge of crime in South Africa and believes that communities should be empowered with real time information to protect themselves against criminals who act with impunity against law abiding citizens.
There has been a welcome increase in drug related crimes with 48 arrests being made for either dealing or being in possession of drugs over the past three months in Jeffreys Bay.
