1882: Queen Street, Port Elizabeth

Queen Street in the early days had its fair share of canteens or hotels. At the corner of Russell Road and Queen Street stood the Commercial Hotel, owned for many years by Mr I. Hirsch. Then followed the ‘George and Dragon’ under Mr D. Kinsley, the ‘Oddfellows Arms’ owned by Mr J.E. Landrey, the ‘Fountain Hotel’ was managed for years by Jas Lyons, the ‘British Lion’ was conducted by Mr john Mann in Princes Street, not far from it was the ‘Empire Hotel’ of Peter Moram.

The ‘Vine Hotel’ was run by Thomas O’Brien in Queen Street, James Wynne owned the old ‘Rose and Shamrock Hotel’ in Princes Street and the last one was the ‘Frontier Hotel’ in Adderley Street under the management of Mr F.O. Mattison. The ‘Albion Hotel’ was owned by Mr John Williams in Queen Street.
