1875: Grand Review
On 17 November 1859, the Volunteer Artillery Corps was formed in Port Elizabeth under Colonel Piney and Captains Rutherford and Kemp assisted by Lieutenant Wilmot and Sergeant P. Flanagan.
On 6 August 1860 the Volunteer Rifles and Artillery Corps formed a special guard of honour to the ‘Sailor Prince’, H.R.H. Prince Alfred.
The Governor-General, Sir George Grey expressed the desire that a guard of the Rifles be formed to accompany the Prince during his stay in Port Elizabeth. The Corps was subsequently renamed to ‘Princes Alfred’s Guard’.
