Amazon announced on Wednesday its first successful customer delivery using a drone. Amazon Prime Air delivered the goods on 7 December to Richard B. of Cambridgeshire, England who lives very close to one of Amazon’s fulfillment centers.
Amazon is promising drone deliveries within 30 minutes – an undertaking that suggests drone deliveries will likely be limited, at least in the beginning, to major population centers where Amazon will have plenty of customers within range of its fulfillment centers. An additional constraint on the deliveries is that the packages must be 2.26 kilograms or less in weight.
On the question of Safety and Security Amazon says; “Safety is our top priority. Our vehicles will be built with multiple redundancies, as well as sophisticated ‘sense and avoid’ technology. Additionally, through our private trial in the UK, we will gather data to continue improving the safety and reliability of our systems and operations.”
Prime Air development centers are currently in the United States, the United Kingdom, Austria and Israel.
Amazon say that they are working with regulators and policymakers in various countries in order to make Prime Air a reality for customers around the world, and expect to continue to do so. In regards to South Africa the cynics of the country will only have one word to say to ensure success; “Guptarise.”
