The privately owned Kragga Kamma Golf Course was founded in 2001 and started off as a very rough and modest 9 hole lay-out for social golfers. In the early days the only T-box was loaded on weekends and holidays, making it a long and frustrating wait for a slot to begin your game. This prompted the development of the second 9 holes and several revisions and length extensions to the original 9 holes.
Work on the second 9 holes started early in 2011 and was completed in October 2011. The second 9 has also been extended again since then. Players can now choose to play off the Club or Forward T’s while the Ladies can T-off from their dedicated T’s.
The Club is part of the EPGU and is registered with SAGA, allowing affiliated players to swipe their scores into the national network and the course is rated as a par 70.
With 18 holes, the pressure on the only T-box has been reduced tremendously. Kragga Kamma still remains the golf course where one can play a challenging round of golf for well under R100. Members pay R40 for 18 holes.
On 26 October, the Kragga Kamma Golf Course will be celebrating it’s 12th birthday and launching the extended lay-out. An extra par 5 will come into operation and one of the existing par 3’s, become a par 4. There will also be a re-orientation of the second 9, resulting in the 18th hole being in close proximity to the Club House. From this day on, the Club will also be known as the Kragga Kamma Country Club.
Many fund raising functions are held at the golf course by Schools and Churches. As an a 18-hole course all levels of golfers can now be accommodated without disadvantaging the more serious golfing fraternity. There is ample and safe parking and a typical out of town atmosphere is offered.
While golf is the key focus, provision is also made for squash, table tennis, pool and bowls. There is a function room which can accommodate 80 people with cutlery and crockery to support this. This is a Wi-fi hot spot area and has an overhead projector for presentations. A well-stocked bar facility is part of the Club house. Overlooking the golf course, there is an outside braai area which can cater for 30 or more people.
The golf course in general remains a ‘work in progress’. At the beginning of 2012, the first ever Committee was selected. This has resulted in the arrangement of various activities. Monthly golf competitions are held and many golfers have walked away with attractive prizes. A suggestion box in the Club house allows patrons to make themselves heard. The Committee reviews these inputs at the monthly meetings.
There are a number of special offers being run by Kragga Kamma golf course. Amongst these there are:
- ‘Magic Mondays’ – Pensioners play all day for a single payment. Members pay R20 only.
- School going children pay only R20 for 9 holes and accommodating teachers can join in for the same amount.
- Play 5 games and your 6th one is for free.
- Mussel Crackers group. These are Pensioners meeting on Tuesday mornings for a 9-hole competition. All welcome to join in. They have recently started a monthly inter club 18-hole competition on a Thursday. The intention is to grow this camaraderie to include more similar groups. This proves to be an outing with a lot of fun and it is in its early days only.
- Once a month an evening of Night golf is arranged under the definition of ‘Lots of fun after sunset’. Many golfers have already enjoyed this Friday evening outing. This is also when the outside braai area comes to the fore.
Standing on the 4th T-box, it is always a pleasure to enjoy the free roaming wildlife in the adjoining Game Park. Golfers thrill to see Rhinoceros – one of the big 5 – as well as Giraffe and other species in close proximity. A visit to the Kragga Kamma Game Park is also highly recommended.
Kragga Kamma Golf Course is on FaceBook and its regular events are published on it’s home page.
In the next few months it is envisaged that the course will be upgraded further with some strategically placed bunkers and gardens to lend some more colour and make it more attractive to host EPGU competitions. A practice putting area will also be established. This will further add colour to the course which already boasts 4 dams and two environmentally sensitive areas.
While most of the funds being generated by the Committee are utilised to fund enhancements to the Club, the Kragga Kamma Golf course/ Country Club is involved with Community programmes and has already pledged donations via the ‘Algoa Cares’ programme being run via Algoa FM.
Members are looking forward to the Anniversary golf day on 26 October – bookings are already open and many sponsors and players have already confirmed, some from out of town. Many sponsor prizes continue to pour in for this IPS competition. There are still slots available – as up to 240 golfers can be accommodated.
