Shanaaz helps in keeping Boardwalk’s heart beating with efficiency and passion

6 August 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

Executive Secretary, Shanaaz Borman. celebrates more than a decade at The Bay’s Playground.

This year marks 15 years for Shanaaz Borman as Boardwalk Hotel and Casino’s Executive Secretary, during which time she’s played a supporting role to four General Managers as they managed the operations of Boardwalk and its 400-plus employees.

The born-and-bred Gqeberha woman recalled how proud she was to be hired by Sun International to join Boardwalk Casino in 2009 as an Executive Office Administrator. “The interview process and tests were intense, it felt like a huge huge accomplishment. The training also made me feel like I wanted to be part of the team, deeply ingraining a sense of passion and dedication,” said the 43-year-old, who still today does not walk past a piece of paper or glass without picking it up.

As a hospitality business, a large part of her role is focused on customer service. “I deal with complaints that reach our General Manager, Tati Tsunke’s office. This means maintaining composure, being polite and calming the customer down by sorting the problem out. Most people are happy when you come back to them with feedback.” As a wife and mother of two teenage daughters and a five-year-old son, Borman uses these skills in her personal life as well.

Aside from daily administration support and project communication, for the past three years, under Tsunke’s guidance, Borman has also managed Boardwalk’s socio-economic development projects, which are a crucial focus for Sun International and aim to positively impact the community. “I vet, monitor and evaluate the projects while leading the project team and timelines from start to finish. Last year we handed over the Walmer Township Cricket Nets which was my first big project, and we are looking at doing a coaching clinic in the next school holiday. Seeing the smiles on the faces of beneficiaries and knowing we are making a difference in their lives is the most amazing feeling,” she said.

Under Borman’s leadership, Boardwalk last year won four awards at the Eastern Cape Gambling Board CSI Awards for various projects.

“The satisfaction of seeing a project come to fruition from the planning stage to completion has fuelled my passion for studying in this field.” She has completed many learnerships and courses with Sun International over the years such as a Business Administration Course and will study towards a Project Management Diploma next.

“Being part of the changes at Boardwalk over the years has been amazing – when I joined, the hotel had not yet been built. You have to embrace change and go forward with it to get things done.” She recalls working closely on the construction project which included arranging accommodation, flights and even renting and furnishing houses for the consultants. “Over the years I have done it all and had the pleasure of meeting several famous people including various Miss South Africa’s, Saudi princes, and soapie actress Katherine Kelly Lang from The Bold and the Beautiful.

Having worked with three previous General Managers and now Tsunke, Borman said she had been lucky to enjoy good working relationships with all, despite their different leadership styles. “Currently we have a young, dynamic team, and a culture of openness and sharing under Tati, who lets you get the job done in your way while still driving you to achieve.”

In her spare time, she enjoys unplugging while camping at the beach, watching movies, cooking and braaing with her family.

Mandela Day united 50 staff from Boardwalk Hotel and Casino with representatives from Boardwalk Mall, Upright Security and Bidvest Protea Coin to pack 250 buckets of grocery items for charitable organisations.

In shifts of 67 minutes to honour the late Nelson Mandela who spent 67 years fighting for human rights, the volunteers packed essential non-perishable groceries which were donated to Healing Minds, Healing Hands, Busy Bee Day Care, Khayalethu Youth Centre and Gelvandale Frail Care.

Each bucket represents our commitment to spreading love and care throughout the community, helping to feed many individuals and families in need,” said Boardwalk Hotel and Casino General Manager, Tati Tsunke. “Thank you to all our volunteers for honouring the spirit of Mandela Day by giving back to our community.”

Boardwalk and EC Gambling Board join forces to guide learners on career paths

In a display of community collaboration, almost 1 000 learners from 19 schools in Nelson Mandela Bay were this week provided with invaluable insights into their futures thanks to the Boardwalk Hotel and Casino Career Expo.

The event, in partnership with the Eastern Cape Gambling Board, served as an opportunity for Grade 11 and 12 learners from underprivileged backgrounds to be exposed to a diverse array of career options, and afforded the chance to connect with 25 exhibitors, from prospective sponsors, employers, educational institutions, to professionals from various industries such as hospitality, banking, retail and healthcare.

Boardwalk’s General Manager, Tati Tsunke emphasised the broader spectrum of career opportunities available within Sun International, extending beyond traditional roles in hospitality to areas such as HR, legal, IT, gaming/casino management, and finance. “Our aim is to not only educate and support youth as they embark on their career journeys, but also to highlight the various job possibilities within the economy,” .

The event’s keynote speaker, Senior Director: Supply Chain Management at the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Dr Ntomboxolo Ngxesha, inspired learners with a powerful message of self-discovery and ambition. “I see myself in each of you, having once walked the same halls and faced similar challenges. If I could achieve my dreams, so can you,” she affirmed, encouraging learners to embrace their potential.

Beyond enriching sessions and networking, learners were given gifts and vouchers from generous exhibitors including Woolworths and Nyosi Wildlife Reserve. “These tokens will not only provide valuable experiences but also afford glimpses into the diverse career landscapes awaiting exploration,” said Boardwalk HR Manager, Nopinkie Timba.

In a digital age fraught with challenges, over 950 learners pledged to safeguard their online presence under the guidance of Nelson Mandela University Professor Noluxolo Gcaza, and founder of the Cyberculture Foundation. Addressing the importance of maintaining a positive digital footprint, Gcaza emphasised that “the internet never forgets”.

Recognising the formidable obstacles faced by today’s youth, Boardwalk remains steadfast in its commitment to effecting positive social and economic change. “Supporting education is one of Sun International’s socio-economic development focus areas, and through events such as the Career Expo, Boardwalk reaffirms our dedication to fostering a brighter future for all,” Tsunke said.

Boardwalk Hotel and Casino appoints new duty managers

19 March 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

Nelson Mandela’s Playground, Boardwalk Hotel and Casino, has appointed two new hotel duty managers to keep the four-star Sun International beachfront hotel in top shape.

Lubabalo Gxaleka and Busisiwe Vellem are responsible for front office operations, managing the cleaning contractor, staff morale and performance to keep the hotel functioning at optimum levels. The two alternate shifts to ensure the hotel is covered by a duty manager 12 hours a day.

When Gxaleka grew up in the Transkei, the idea of hospitality as a career did not enter his thoughts. “After school I started working in IT and got into hospitality by chance. I gave a friend my CV and I started as a barman at a hotel,” he said. A few years later he studied a Bachelor of Commerce in Hospitality Management and project management in Hotel Opening at NHL Stenden University. He also holds a Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics from the American Hotel and Lodging Association. “Hospitality is my passion, even though I knew nothing about it when I started. I have fallen in love with helping people and it was a blessing in disguise because there are many opportunities,” Gxaleka said.

The 36-year-old has returned to Gqeberha after 14 years and is adjusting to life in Nelson Mandela Bay. “I am currently studying management at Regent Business School so I don’t have much leisure time, except to visit my nine-year-old daughter Siyolise in Port Alfred.”

Vellem, who joined Boardwalk in 2012, has worked her way up from the housekeeping department to the front desk, and now, works with Gxaleka managing a team of 13. “I had aspirations after school to become a nurse, but financial constraints led me to get a bursary to complete a Marketing Management certificate from Buffalo City College.” The Qonce-born mother of two said she fell into hospitality by accident after moving to Nelson Mandela Bay. “I completed a housekeeping learnership programme through SETA, then become a desk clerk, housekeeping supervisor and assistant housekeeper. I also did my in-service training at reception, and I have learnt so much in the past 12 years. You never get bored.”

540kg and a …. Motorbike

4 March 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

The Boardwalk Hotel and Casino has donated a motorcycle to the Beachfront Safety Sector as part of the Sun International hospitality leader’s commitment to improving safety and security in the area.

The 200cc motorbike was previously used by Boardwalk to patrol its parking lot, but since the launch of Boardwalk Mall it has been out of commission. “We are happy to have donated this motorcycle so that it can be used by the South African Police Service to patrol the beachfront area, and keep both tourists and locals safe,” said Boardwalk General Manager, Tati Tsunke, who is also the chair of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber beachfront cluster.

“This is just one step towards strengthening the cluster to be responsive to the challenges facing it.” Boardwalk also made donations towards a CCTV system with cameras for the area from King’s Beach to Pollock Beach, and solar lighting for Shark Rock Pier.

Shaun Tappan, chairman of Beachfront Safety Sector thanked Boardwalk for the contribution and the hospitality giant’s commitment to fighting crime. “The motorbike will assist us in patrolling the hard to reach spots and reduce costs due to its low fuel consumption.”

Further efforts to maintain the beachfront included a beach clean-up on February 17, hosted by Boardwalk Mall, Boardwalk Hotel and Casino in collaboration with Pick n Pay, Spur Steak Ranches, Wildlife, The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa and Don’t Waste.

Close to 200 people participated in the initiative, including learners from Pearson High, Kabega Primary, Brandwag High, Grey High, Westering High and Collegiate High, as well as employees from Checkers Boardwalk Mall, Jenni Gault International Jewellery Design and Madibaz Rugby.

A total of 12 wheelie bins of waste were collected – about 540kg – of which five contained glass, plastic, aluminium cans and paper for recycling.

Boardwalk’s new maintenance manager builds on a culture of reliability

Gadu doing due diligence as he settles in to Nelson Mandela Bay’s Playground.

Armed with international qualifications and a mindset of customer service and safety, Boardwalk’s new maintenance manager, Luncedo Gadu, is ready to keep facilities at the Gqeberha hotel and casino in tip top shape.

The East London-born man took his schooling at Buchule Technical High School in Mdantsane seriously, going on to secure an electrical engineering diploma from Vaal University of Technology and a Bachelor of Engineering in electrical and electronics from Universiti Teknologi Petronas in Malaysia, courtesy of a government scholarship. “It was a positive, life-changing opportunity,” Gadu said of his three years in Malaysia.

The 45-year-old has “seen a couple of different sunrises”, having lived around the country. His previous position was as a maintenance manager in the construction and petro-chemical industries in Mossel Bay, and his move to Boardwalk is his first foray into the hospitality industry. He is finding the change of pace refreshing, he said.

“In construction, you have times which are less quiet, and then times of emergency. Here, as long as we have guests, the pace is always on and consistent. When customers are involved, there is even more pressure to deliver good service,” Gadu said. He and his team of 10, including maintenance supervisors, HVAC specialists and handymen, are responsible for ensuring that lights, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration are all functioning.

“We are also looking at energy saving measures which are a priority across Sun International. What this looks like for Boardwalk are things like motion sensors for the escalators so that they don’t run 24 hours a day, and occupancy sensors for common areas. Our processes must be integrated into health and safety, so I aim to have more toolbox talks and hold regular meetings to ensure seamless handover on projects.”

Gadu’s arrival in Nelson Mandela Bay was brought on by his wife’s new job in the petro-chemical industry. “It’s great to be closer to home, just a few hours’ drive from East London,” he said.

In his spare time, Gadu enjoys reading current affairs, politics, engineering and science. “Anything except novels.”

Celebrating the Chinese Year of the Dragon for strength, energy and vitality as the Boardwalk Casino dazzles Chinese honouree guests with dragon dance line-up.

This past weekend, Boardwalk Casino played host to a colourful spectacle as they celebrated the upcoming Chinese New Year, the Year of the Dragon, considered to be a symbol of strength, energy and vitality.

The honouree guests, which included Larry Pow Chong, Chairman of Chinese Community, were dazzled by the dragon dance performed by the Shun Wu Tang Martial Arts Academy.

Set against a backdrop of beating drums and clashing cymbals, the dragon dance serves as an effective deterrent against evil spirits and a harbinger of good fortune.

Most Valued Guest (MVG) members received a gift on arrival at Kipling’s Brasserie before being greeted by a traditional dragon dance and dining on Chinese cuisine. Closing off a lively evening, eight guests walked away with prizes totalling R24,000 in a lucky draw.

In addition to the dragon dance performed by the academy, guests were also treated to a live music duet.

“Every year, we pull out all the stops for our Chinese community to see in the New Year and to create lasting memories together,” says Boardwalk General Manager, Tsunke Tati. “We wish all our guests celebrating the Chinese New Year happiness and prosperity.”

“The merrymaking at Boardwalk welcomed in a new lunar year, but was also an opportunity to honour and sustain the wonderful relationship between Sun International and the Chinese community,” Tati said.

Boardwalk hotel and casino reduce municipal water demand with reverse osmosis plant

21 December 2023 by Guest Leave a Comment

Boardwalk Hotel and Casino has commenced using water from its reverse osmosis plant, built last year at a cost of R3,5-million, after receiving its water use licence from the Department of Water and Sanitation in October.

Visitors and guests to the hotel will be using the water, which comes from an underground fresh water source and previously diverted into the ocean, for showering, bathing, flushing of toilets and to wash their hands.

For the past eight years, Nelson Mandela Bay has been held in the grip of one of its worst droughts in history. After heavy rains in the past few months, the Kouga Dam, Churchill, Loerie and Groendal dams are full, however the crucial Impofu Dam hovers around 44% – up from 8% this time last year.

“Installed by a Gqeberha engineering company, the plant supplies us with 100 000 litres of potable water, which is safe for drinking, daily. However, we still provide our guests with bottled water in their rooms,” said Tati Tsunke, General Manager of Boardwalk Hotel and Casino. “This will reduce the demand on the Nelson Mandela Bay municipal system now and in the future to assist during periods of drought.” The water is tested once a month to ensure it is within the acceptable parameters.

The casino is connected to large water storage tanks located at the hotel via a 400-metre pipe. The water fountain uses grey water, the automatic irrigation system has been switched off and watering is being done by hand, using recovered water. The water based air-conditioning tower systems have been adapted to use non-potable water.

Boardwalk hotel and casino will use on average 40 000 litres of municipal water per day, depending on occupancy.
The plant was complete in October 2022, and the water use licence granted in October 2023, valid for a period of 20 years.

“With this reverse osmosis plant which uses water that would otherwise be wasted, Boardwalk is happy to once again demonstrate that we are a responsible corporate citizen within Nelson Mandela Bay,” Tsunke concluded.
