IEC will ‘vigorously oppose’ any legal action

voting, independent electoral commission

As at 3:30pm on Saturday all the valid votes cast in the 2019 National and Provisional Elections had been captured by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC). Even though the road to the finalisation of the results has not been easy, the IEC has said it will vigorously oppose any legal action aimed at interfering in the conduct of elections and the finalisation and announcement of the election results. In response to a letter demanding that the Electoral Commission undertake an independent audit by an auditor of the parties choosing and a “rerun” of the elections, the Commission …

The Electoral Commission of South Africa is set to announce the results of the 2019 elections this evening, as vote counting draws to completion. President of Maleta Motse Africa Community Authority, Micheal Kotsokoane, told SAnews on Saturday that as observers they were happy with the manner in which the elections have been …

Elections 2019: Eastern Cape’s Winners and Losers – some surprises here

IN comparing the 2014 to 2019 National Elections the space was definitely more populated in 2019 with 48 parties contesting the Provincial Elections vs 29 in 2014. Interestingly 10 parties that contested the 2014 elections did not return for the 2019 elections meaning that we had an additional 29 new political parties enter the voters roll in 2019 along with the 19 'stayers'. Biggest Winner: Of all the parties contesting the 2019 Eastern Cape Provincial elections the biggest uptake this year compared to 2014 was for the Economic Freedom Fighters - EFF, who more than doubled their support …

Smaller Parties Doing Better Than Expected

Municipal Elections Ballot Paper. Vote

Political analysts scrutinising the 2019 National and Provincial Election results have heaped praise at the rate at which votes are being processed. This, they said, was apparent as results were steadily streaming in from voting stations across the country. Political analyst Sthembile Mbete spoke to SAnews at the National Results Operation Centre in Pretoria on Thursday. “The results have been fascinating. I think we should not be projecting too much from the results that are in so far. The results that have come in so far are predominately from the Northern Cape and Western Cape and …

As allegations swirl regarding two potential instances of double voting, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has assured voters of the overall integrity of the electoral process. “Two separate instances have been brought to the attention of the Electoral Commission over the past few hours, in which it is alleged voters were able to cast more than one vote at different voting stations,” the IEC said two hours after voting stations closed at 9pm on Wednesday. As South Africans today head to the polls to cast their vote in the sixth General Elections, the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) has wished the country a safe and peaceful voting day. “The SACCI wishes South Africans a safe and peaceful voting day, as they exercise their constitutional right to choose their preferred political leaders through a secret ballot,” said SACCI Chief Executive Officer Alan Mukoki. This as 26.7 million registered voters across the country are expected to make their “X” at the 22 924 voting stations set up for this purpose. Mukoki …

Lessons from Apartheid

South African Flag

Growing up during those Godless times taught me one lesson about voting that I have carried through to this day: I have a simple voting philosophy in our democratic state: Vote for the strongest opposition. Why? A healthy democracy depends on a healthy opposition AND, because politicians are politicians and everybody lies. South Africa cannot afford to let any party gain an unassailable majority (like the apartheid driven National Party had) as that will lead to much pain in our beloved country. We must have a strong opposition to keep the ruling party in check and honest. …
